In GDR times Chemnitz was called Karl-Marx-Stadt. The city was a regular stage of the International Peace Race. Located on the edge of the Ore Mountains, the mountains are virtually on the doorstep. 1952 led the eighth stage from Leipzig to Chemnitz. On the 212 kilometers, some tough climbs awaited the pros, who at the end of the Belgian Raymond van Hoven best stuck away and was the first to enter the Ernst Thälmann Stadium (today Sportforum Chemnitz).

Opened in 1950, the Chemnitz cycling track is considered, alongside the Bielefeld cycling track, the fastest concrete cycling track in Germany.
The oval, whose infield is accessible via a tunnel, offers space for approximately 15,000 spectators. In 1960, the World Championship in motor-paced racing was held here, and in 2001, the German Track Cycling Championships.
Until the summer of 2017, the cycling track itself was completely renovated, with spectator stands planned for a later date.
