The hall church, built in 1499, was rebuilt between 1945 and 1948 after its destruction in the Second World War. It consists of a nave, a retracted, three-sided choir in the east, to which a church tower was added at the apex of the choir in 1737. It was extended with a storey with chamfered corners, which houses the tower clock and the bell cage, and covered with an onion dome.

The Spitalkirche Heilig Kreuz is a historic Roman Catholic hall church in the heart of Sonthofen in the Oberallgäu, which was originally consecrated in 1499. The church was built in the course of the founding of the Distriktspitalstiftung by Canon Dr. Conrad Wenger and the Prince-Bishop of Augsburg. The adjacent hospital served over the centuries as an almshouse and until 1920 as a local hospital.
