    Hiking

Exciting traverse of Devil’s Bridge rock arch.

    December 30, 2020

    Hiking

Worm's Head is reachable for about 2.5 hours either side of low tide, giving a five hour access window, plenty long enough for the round-trip, from the edge of the promontory, of 2.5 miles. Including the walk from the nearest parking area, in the village of Rhossili, the total is 4.5 miles; the hike affords a spectacular views of the island, the cliffs of the promontory, Rhossili Bay, Rhossili Downs, and the coastline to the east, while added interest comes from rock formations, spring/summer wildflowers, the plentiful tide pools, and a herd of sheep that graze the mainland

Embark on a moderate hike across the unique tidal island of Worm's Head, starting from Rhossili. This 4.7-mile (7.6 km) route, with a total elevation gain of 314 feet (96 metres), offers a distinctive coastal adventure. You can expect to complete this journey in about 2 hours and 12 minutes, traversing varied terrain that includes rocky sections and coastal paths.

Careful planning is essential for this route, as the causeway to Worm's Head is only accessible for a limited time around low tide. You will have a window of approximately 2.5 hours on either side of low tide to cross safely and return. Always check the tide times before you set out to ensure you do not get cut off by the incoming water.

This iconic headland, named by Vikings for its serpent-like shape, is a geological marvel. As you explore, you will encounter features like the Devil's Bridge Natural Arch, which connects parts of the island, and a blowhole that can be active during rough seas. Remember that access to the Outer Head is restricted from March to August to protect nesting birds.

This 6.1-mile (9.9 km) journey involves a total elevation gain of 501 feet (153 metres) and typically takes around 2 hours and 49 minutes to complete. When planning your visit, be aware that extending your hike to Worm's Head requires careful timing with the tides; the causeway is only exposed for about 2.5 hours on either side of low tide. The trail includes uneven terrain and some steep stone steps, so sturdy walking boots are highly recommended for your comfort and safety. You will also pass through active farmland with gates, where ponies and cattle graze year-round, so please keep dogs on a lead and close gates behind you. Parking is available near the trailhead, but it can get busy during peak season.

This route is renowned for showcasing the natural beauty of the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering a unique blend of coastal and pastoral landscapes. Beyond the striking views of Worm's Head, you will also glimpse Fall Bay and the historic
