The deceased citizens of Waldthurn are commemorated on these "dead boards". Background Death Boards, especially in the Bavarian Forest and the Upper Palatinate: According to popular belief, the soul of the dead cannot rest until the Death Board has completely disintegrated. In order to speed up the process, soft wood was preferred there, which was also exposed to the weather.
