    Hiking

Burton Bradstock is a stunning Dorset village lying just back from the beach in Lyme Bay. A popular holiday destination, the village has everything you need with cafes, pubs and lovely accommodation.

You can walk down to the coast path and hike in either direction on paths maintained by the National Trust as part of the South West Coast Path. The long-distance Hardy Way path also follows the coast here, affording outstanding views of the sea, to the Isle of Portland and across the bay to Lyme Regis and further west.

The Burton Bradstock coastal walk from Hive Beach offers a diverse hiking experience along the Jurassic Coast. You will encounter dramatic cliffs, expansive shingle beaches, and rolling countryside, with panoramic views stretching west to Golden Cap. The terrain is varied, with some sections following the South West Coast Path close to cliff edges, and others involving moderate slopes or steep descents that can be muddy. This moderate 5.9-mile (9.5 km) route involves about 327 feet (100 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 2 hours and 31 minutes to complete. Sensible walking shoes with good grip are recommended for the varied surfaces.

Hive Beach serves as a convenient starting point for this hike, offering a cafe and other facilities. The nearby village of Burton Bradstock also provides amenities like pubs and shops if you need to stock up. Be aware that some sections, especially when descending towards places like West Bay, can be very steep and become slippery in wet weather. Always wear appropriate footwear with good grip to navigate the varied and sometimes challenging surfaces. While parts of the trail are easily accessible, the longer coastal sections require good fitness and sure-footedness.

This trail is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast, showcasing 185 million years of geological history. You might even spot fossils like ammonites, often exposed by rockfalls from the distinctive golden Bridport Sands of Burton Cliff. The area also holds historical significance, having been a hotspot for smugglers and used by Allied soldiers for D-Day landing practice. You will see iconic landmarks like Golden Cap and Chesil Beach, the largest shingle ridge in the world, adding to the unique character of this coastal journey.
