You don't really know how old this gate is. In all likelihood, it dates from the 5th century and is of Roman origin. However, it was also part of the Moorish city fortifications, hence the current name "Arch of the Citadel". However, the arch itself and the rooms above it only date from the early Middle Ages, when the Aragons already ruled over Palma.

The Arco de la Almudaina is located in the street of the same name and is a Gothic-style archway that stands where one of the gates to the Roman city used to be. It is the entrance to one of the most important streets in the old town, since in Calle Almudaina we find the courtyards of Can Oms and Can Bordils, two of the most spectacular in Palma.
