Much upland landscape has been shaped by historic landslides but, when you hike around the Quiraing, you’ll see geology on a whole new level. The biggest landslide in Britain, the unique character of the Quiraing is down to this: it’s still moving.

The eastern flank of Skye’s Meall na Suiramach, the Quiraing is the name for the immense geological slump that’s gradually working its way to the sea. It’s odd to think of such a mighty landscape as in motion, but all it takes is a glance at the road around its base to see the effect.

Hiking around the Quiraing makes for a fantastic adventure on other levels too. For a start, its nature has created incredible rock and earth formations. Lying in the Trotternish peninsula, rambling around its otherwordly landscape never fails to lift your mood.

Exploring Skye’s natural wonderland

You can access the Quiraing from the A855, a coastal road that is often being repaired around Flodigarry, thanks to the Quiraing’s shifting nature. There are numerous parking areas along the single track but starting from Flodigarry offers an outstanding hike south into the jumble of landscape.

Atmospheric, there is nothing not mind-blowing about the surroundings and their beauty transcends weather conditions. The minor road to the south is another excellent place to leave your car and roam this phenomenal, broken fantasy land. As you hike, explore the most notable sights of the perfectly flat Table, the jutting Needle and the fortress-like Prison. So unbelievable are the structures, you may as well be in Middle Earth.

Summer covers the Quiraing in verdant grass whilst low light shines golden across its tumbling forms during the shoulder season. Dappled white in winter, there is no part of the year not worth seeing here.

    Hiking

The Quiraing is an astonishing landslip caused by underlying sedimentary rock giving way to heavier basalt deposited as a result of ancient volcanic activity. It's an iconic and unique place to explore, one of Britain's most beguiling natural wonders. There are many incredible rock formations among the massive cliffs of Meall na Suiramach, though special mention has to go to the hugely impressive Prison, the 120-foot (37 m) pinnacle of the Needle and the green plateau of the Table.
