The Saint-Maurice fortress area, together with the Sargans and St. Gotthard fortresses, was one of the three major fortress areas of the Swiss Army in the reduit defense system of the Second World War and during the Cold War.

Cycling

Due to its strategic location, St-Maurice was of great military importance for many centuries. The Forteresse consists of three military fortresses: Cindey, Scex and Dailly, the largest fortress in Switzerland (more than 10 km). They were built between 1892 and the Second World War and illustrate the history of fortresses in Switzerland. The complex, converted into a museum in 1995, includes kilometers of underground corridors, weapons (including two gun towers), observation posts and garrison areas.
