Arenig Fawr Summit and Flying Fortress Memorial

Hiking

4.8

(29)

Lounging in southern Snowdonia just west of Y Bala, hikes up Arenig Fawr send you on a jaunt up the highest peak in the Arenigs while allowing you to bag multiple summits if you like. You’ll find the summit trig point at 2,802 feet (854 m) along with a memorial plaque, honouring eight American airmen who tragically crashed on the mountain in 1943 during a training flight.

Hiking trails up Arenig Fawr can be boggy but it’s not a given and the track to Llyn Arenig Fawr is clear, making a particularly easy beginning to this largely pathless mountain. A tiny bothy resides alongside the llyn if you’re in need of a night’s sleep, but its diminutive size means you might find yourself out of luck.

Picture perfect panoramas from Arenig Fawr’s summit

Hiking around the southern curve of the llyn and ascending towards the Y Castell crag to the east means your views will start getting more interesting quickly, particularly as the llyn drops away below. Rough, rocky terrain requires surefootedness up Arenig Fawr and with a few fences to negotiate, you’ll be kept on your toes, yet no technically challenging areas will crop up.

The ridgeline to the summit spoils you for views before you even touch the trig point, and clear days bring 360-degree views of Snowdonia and mid Wales. With a few scrambly routes to experiment with nearing the summit, depending on your appetite, Arenig Fawr is a fun mountain to play on.

Standing at the peak in clear, haze-free weather, look north to Snowdon, the Glyders and the Carneddau. When you’ve had your fill of views, you can descend to the northeast and then north back to Arenig.

Wet weather will bring a boggy edge to your hiking but, generally, you can hike this lovely mountain throughout the year, being mindful to avoid any more extreme weather. Find food and accommodation in Y Bala to the east.
