The castle of Padern raises its ruins on a limestone peak overlooking the village and the gorges of the Verdouble, in the Aude. Occupied since prehistoric times and then by the Romans, attracted by the region's mineral wealth, the site has been cited since 889 as belonging to the abbey of Lagrasse, before being remodeled in the 17th century by the lord Pierre de Vic. Perched on its steep slopes which made it almost impregnable, it once served as a refuge for Occitan knights like Chabert de Barbaira. A stage of the Cathar Trail (Sentier Cathare), it is reached by a marked and steep path from the village, but the interior of the ruins, being fragile, remains closed to access for safety reasons.

With its wild-west feel, Violette's small grocery store offers good meals based on local products. The place is also a grocery store (practical for stocking up before continuing a long hike).

This small rural town is nestled in the heart of the Corbières massif. The peaceful village is best known for its castle and its havens of coolness found along the Verdouble (river which crosses the gorges of the same name). It's an ideal stopover to spend the night or simply take a break. There you will find several cafes and restaurants.

Castle Quéribus was one of the last refuges of the Cathars who had not fled to Italy (including Verona). The castle fell in 1255, after Louis IX ordered it to be taken. The stories differ about the circumstances. The fact is that the then lord of the castle, knight and protege of the Aragonese king eventually reappeared at the Spanish court. At the top the wind roars around your ears. Here the Atlantic and Mediterranean winds meet and fight each other around Quéribus. Take care of your glasses, your hat and your traveling companions. It can get tough.
