The cathedral is Meldorf's landmark; the imposing brick building can be seen from afar. It's centrally located on the market square. The cobblestones make it less than ideal for road bikers, although Meldorf itself is worth seeing.

Pretty little spot in Meldorf. People meet here to have breakfast together, drink coffee, have dinner, go to church etc. etc. ☺️...

No matter which direction you approach Meldorf from, you will be greeted from afar by the "Dithmarscher Cathedral". We are lucky🍀, the door is still open for us because they are still cleaning up for a baptism. St. John's Church, popularly known as the "Dithmarscher Cathedral", is one of the most important medieval church buildings on the west coast. It was built between 1250 and 1300 as a three-aisled basilica with a three-bay transept and a flat-roofed choir. The cathedral received its current exterior appearance after a major fire in 1866. The medieval shape of the interior has essentially been preserved. Before the fire, the church looked more massive, the tower was lower and squatter. Since the organ 🎹 is also being played, we stay in the church a little longer and listen to the music.

"The hand Jacquard loom is one of the first computers in the world. Don't believe it? Then pay attention: In 1805, Joseph-Marie Jacquard invented the mechanical control for it in Lyon and thus the first automatic loom was created. It was "programmed" with punch cards and thus made a decisive contribution to the industrial revolution. Weavers could now produce endless, complex patterns repeatedly. Our weavers also produce high-quality table linen and woolen blankets on flat looms."

A very beautiful organ in the cathedral, unfortunately I couldn't hear it play. "The organ in the Meldorf Cathedral was built in 1977 by the Danish organ builder Marcussen in Apenrade. It is one of the largest organs in Schleswig-Holstein. Every year thousands of music lovers come to the cathedral to experience the Meldorf Marcussen organ in concerts."
