Fort Duomont is an interesting historical site. Here you can practically feel the claustrophobia the soldiers must have experienced while fighting here. It's also impressive to think how many died trying to capture this hill.

The Ossuary of Douaumont is an impressive memorial that holds the remains of more than 130,000 unknown French and German soldiers who died during the Battle of Verdun (1916). The bones are visible through small windows in the base – a confronting reminder of the horrors of war. In front of the ossuary is the Nécropole nationale de Douaumont, the largest French military cemetery of the First World War, with 16,142 graves, including a Muslim and Jewish plot. The complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.

The existence of these stairs dates back to the Middle Ages. The stairs were originally carved directly into the rock. They served as a passage between the upper city, the seat of the bishop's spiritual power, and the lower city, a place of intensive trade. The wooden niche contains a statue of the Virgin who indicated the boundary between the jurisdiction of the city and that of the chapter of the cathedral. At the top of the stairs, the old inscription on the wrought iron banister reads: "aux frais de M. Bousmard, grand Prévôst, Claude Amil a faict ceste besogne. 1595". These costs were borne by Mr Bousmard. Claude Amil, made this work in 1595
