„History reminds us,” writes Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in a newspaper article on the occasion of the 'Day of Democratic History' (first celebrated in Germany on March 18, 2026), „how valuable freedom and democracy, human dignity and social justice are – and how laboriously and UNDER WHAT SACRIFICES THEY WERE ONCE WON. But the past also shows what people can achieve with their commitment, what walls they can tear down, and on what fragile foundations authoritarian regimes sometimes stand.”

Bacharach became Protestant in 1545 because its Palatinate authorities converted to the Reformation. This ended 150 years of profitable pilgrimages to the invented "Saint" Werner. In 1997, the memorial plaque at the ruin of the Bacharach Werner Chapel provided exemplary enlightenment. https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/1018567 Oberwesel was under the authority of the Archbishopric of Trier and remained Catholic to this day. It took over the pilgrimage business with its own Werner Chapel. When in 1963 the Archbishopric finally struck the false saint from the list of feast days, Oberwesel stubbornly resisted. Only reluctantly was the chapel rededicated to the Franciscan Mother Rosa.

The Mutter-Rosa-Kapelle in Oberwesel (formerly Wernerkapelle) is the rebuilt choir of the former church of the Holy Spirit Hospital, which was destroyed in 1689. The structure, built on the city wall, is characterized by a baroque roof hood. It is now located in the area of the Loreley Clinics and the retirement home.

Schönburg Castle in Oberwesel occupies a special position among the castles of the Middle Rhine: it remained in the possession of the Holy Roman Empire until its destruction. It was likely built in the first half of the 12th century by Count Palatine Hermann von Stahleck. Later, the Archbishops of Trier expanded the defenses of the contiguous group of castles. Among other things, the over 20-meter-high shield wall and the extensive outer baileys were constructed during this period. Despite structural alterations during the 20th century, Schönburg Castle still possesses a considerable amount of original building fabric, with the high shield wall being particularly striking. Today, the grounds house a hotel-restaurant, a Kolping House (a community center), and the Tower Museum. Hikers can reach Schönburg Castle via the Rhine Castles Trail (RheinBurgenWeg).
