A canyon as a valley On its way through the French Ardennes, the Meuse makes its way deep into a very enclosed valley. The river flows 300 meters below the top of the hill through this canyon. The steep slopes in this narrow valley are covered with forests. This rough landscape gave rise to many terrible legends. The Meuse hits three huge rocks. The spectacle is surprising and seems to belong in another country. Not surprisingly, this place was little visited: it is said that the devil used to hold satanic gatherings here… The legend: In 1080 there is a party in Hierges. The three sons of the liege lord marry Hodierne, Berthe and Ige, the three most beautiful daughters of the Earl of Rethel. However, the fairy tale does not last long: when the three brothers go to battle during the first crusade, love proves no match for their long absence. On the day that Godfrey of Bouillon conquers Jerusalem with his faithful, the three sisters are unfaithful and they throw themselves into the arms of the three knights of Hierges. The feudal lord has no mercy and turns the three adulterous sisters into rocks. You have the best view of the 'Dames de Meuse' if you take the Voie verte from Revin or Monthermé. They stand motionless in the Maas forever and ever. From Laifour you reach the hilltop via a path. From there you arrive at the viewpoint on the Dames de Meuse.

The Dames de Meuse are a set of three cliffs that are now covered. of trees. But above all they represent a legend well anchored in Ardennes culture. According to legend, the three sons of an esteemed lord, married Berthe, Hodierne and Ige, the 3 daughters of the lord of Rethel, before leaving for the crusade. These, infidels, are transformed by God into three enormous rocks at the precise hour when Jerusalem was taken by assault.
