"Zeller Schwarze Katz" Roundabout Figure, Zell On August 18, 2012, the new oversized Zeller Schwarze Katz sculpture was finally unveiled on the new roundabout with an opening ceremony hosted by the Wine Queen. Standing 5 meters tall, it now raises its glass to the sky, toasting the crowd. So, I can now let the cat out of the bag and reveal the final secret of my pyramid, in whose (weather) protection this oversized sculpture, weighing almost 9 tons, was created since November of last year. To ensure smooth transport from the studio's outdoor area to Zell on the Moselle, certain dimensions and weights could not be exceeded. Therefore, the iron-reinforced foundation plate with a diameter of 2.5 meters and the almost 1.90-meter-long half wine barrel on top was created first. The upper, second half of the barrel is the base plate for the actual cat sculpture. The three iron reinforcements for the tail and legs were cast into it, each consisting of a 70 mm outer tube, an inserted 50 mm inner tube, and an inserted 20 mm steel rod, which were cast into each other. After the legs and tail were constructed and finished, the body block, also made of iron, was constructed and then finished. The surfaces consist of a black or dark brown cement coating. The gray base area, still visible in the photos, is filled with fill to create the core of a typical Mosel vineyard, from which this Zell Black Cat welcomes visitors. There is a wine bar at the cross at the top of Calmont. Taste the wines of Calmont where they are grown. Enjoy the sparkling Riesling wines that are grown here, with homemade cakes and small snacks. The panoramic view of the steepest vineyard in Europe and the Mosel loop is included for free.

Mountaineering routes around Neef are characterized by the dramatic landscape of the Moselle River valley, featuring Europe's steepest vineyard, the Calmont. You can expect challenging routes through steep terrain, often incorporating via ferrata sections. The geological setting includes prominent rock formations and deep river bends, providing a unique environment for outdoor activities. Good physical condition and a head for heights are essential due to the "partly alpine challenges" and technical sections.
Yes, Neef offers several circular mountaineering routes. For example, you can explore the View of Ediger-Eller – Calmont Via Ferrata Entrance loop from Ediger-Eller, an 8.8-mile (14.2 km) trail through the steep vineyards of the Calmont. Another option is the Calmont Summit – Calmont Summit Cross loop from Bremm, a moderate 3.6-mile (5.8 km) route offering great views.
The most prominent feature is the Calmont, Europe's steepest vineyard, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Moselle River and its distinctive loop. The Calmont via ferrata itself is a major attraction, leading through these steep vineyards. You can also enjoy vistas of the Moselle loop and the ruins of Stuben monastery. From the opposite side of Neef, the "Leuchtpunkt Neefer Petersberg" provides magnificent views of Germany's smallest Moselle loop, and the Petersberg mountain features an ancient chapel and cemetery.
The Moselle region is generally pleasant for outdoor activities from spring through autumn. While the Calmont via ferrata can be enjoyed in dry weather, it's important to note that specialized via ferrata equipment isn't strictly necessary then. However, conditions can vary, so always check local weather forecasts. Winter mountaineering might present additional challenges due to colder temperatures and potential ice or snow on steep sections.
The mountaineering routes around Neef, particularly those involving the Calmont via ferrata, are generally considered challenging and require good physical condition and a head for heights. They are often described as having "alpine challenges." While some experienced families might tackle them, these routes are not typically categorized as family-friendly due to their steepness and technical sections. It's best to assess the difficulty of each route carefully before embarking with children.
While many hiking trails in the Moselle region are dog-friendly, the mountaineering routes around Neef, especially those with via ferrata sections like the Calmont, can be very challenging for dogs due to steep climbs, ladders, and steel cables. It's advisable to consider your dog's agility and comfort with such terrain. For a less strenuous option that still offers great views, consider trails that skirt the steepest sections or explore other parts of the Moselsteig Trail.
The mountaineering routes in Neef are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars from around 30 reviews. Mountaineers often praise the dramatic landscape, the exhilarating experience of the via ferrata, and the stunning panoramic views of the Moselle River and its vineyards. The unique "alpine challenges" within a vineyard setting are a particular highlight for many.
Yes, there are several natural attractions nearby. While not directly on the mountaineering routes, you can find beautiful waterfalls such as the Klidinger Waterfall and the Elf Grotto and Elbesbach Waterfall. For lakes, you might enjoy the Biotope Pond on the Fohlbach or the Bonertskump Pond and Gazebo, which offer serene natural settings.
While some sources indicate that specialized via ferrata equipment isn't strictly necessary in dry weather, good physical condition and a head for heights are essential. The route features ladders, steel cables, steps, and pegs. For safety and comfort, sturdy hiking boots with good grip, appropriate clothing for the weather, water, and snacks are highly recommended. If you are new to via ferratas or prefer extra security, a via ferrata set (harness, lanyard with energy absorber, and helmet) would provide additional protection.
The mountaineering routes around Neef are generally rated as moderate to difficult, with 5 out of 8 routes classified as difficult. The region is known for its challenging terrain, particularly the steep vineyards and via ferrata sections of the Calmont. While there are 3 moderate routes, such as the Calmont Via Ferrata Entrance – View of Ediger-Eller loop from Bremm, even these require a good level of fitness and a head for heights. Beginners should carefully assess their capabilities and consider starting with less exposed sections of the Moselsteig Trail before attempting the more demanding mountaineering routes.
Parking is typically available in the villages surrounding the Calmont, such as Neef, Bremm, and Ediger-Eller. Specific parking areas are usually signposted for hikers accessing the Calmont via ferrata and other trails. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking can fill up quickly due to the popularity of the area.
Neef and the surrounding villages along the Moselle River are generally accessible by public transport, primarily by train and bus services. The Moselweinbahn (Moselle Wine Railway) runs along the river, connecting many towns and villages, including Neef. This can be a convenient way to reach trailheads and allows for one-way hikes. Check local train and bus schedules for the most up-to-date information on connections to Neef, Bremm, or Ediger-Eller.
