"Zeller Schwarze Katz" Roundabout Figure, Zell On August 18, 2012, the new oversized Zeller Schwarze Katz sculpture was finally unveiled on the new roundabout with an opening ceremony hosted by the Wine Queen. Standing 5 meters tall, it now raises its glass to the sky, toasting the crowd. So, I can now let the cat out of the bag and reveal the final secret of my pyramid, in whose (weather) protection this oversized sculpture, weighing almost 9 tons, was created since November of last year. To ensure smooth transport from the studio's outdoor area to Zell on the Moselle, certain dimensions and weights could not be exceeded. Therefore, the iron-reinforced foundation plate with a diameter of 2.5 meters and the almost 1.90-meter-long half wine barrel on top was created first. The upper, second half of the barrel is the base plate for the actual cat sculpture. The three iron reinforcements for the tail and legs were cast into it, each consisting of a 70 mm outer tube, an inserted 50 mm inner tube, and an inserted 20 mm steel rod, which were cast into each other. After the legs and tail were constructed and finished, the body block, also made of iron, was constructed and then finished. The surfaces consist of a black or dark brown cement coating. The gray base area, still visible in the photos, is filled with fill to create the core of a typical Mosel vineyard, from which this Zell Black Cat welcomes visitors. Mountaineering routes in Ediger-Eller, particularly those on the Calmont, are known for their significant challenges. The Calmont is Europe's steepest vineyard, featuring an average slope of 70% and loose slate surfaces. Routes like the Calmont Via Ferrata Entrance – View of Ediger-Eller loop from Bremm involve sections of the Calmont Klettersteig, which presents partly alpine challenges with steel cables, ladders, steps, and pegs. Good physical condition and a head for heights are essential.
While many routes in Ediger-Eller are quite challenging due to the steep terrain, there are paths that families can enjoy, though perhaps not strictly 'mountaineering' in the most technical sense. The broader landscape includes vineyards, meadows, and woods, offering varied hiking experiences. For specific family-friendly options, it's best to look for trails with gentler gradients and shorter distances, or consider other activities like boat tours on the Moselle.
The Calmont Klettersteig, a prominent feature of the region's mountaineering experience, is generally not suitable for dogs due to its challenging nature, including ladders and fixed ropes. For other hiking trails in the area, dogs are often welcome, but it's always advisable to keep them on a leash, especially in vineyards or near wildlife, and to ensure they are physically capable of handling the terrain. Always check local regulations for specific trails.
Parking is typically available in the villages of Ediger-Eller and Bremm, which serve as common starting points for many routes, including those accessing the Calmont. Specific parking areas are usually signposted near trailheads. It's recommended to arrive early, especially during peak season, as spaces can fill up quickly.
The region is rich in scenic spots. The Calmont Summit – View of Ediger-Eller loop from Ediger-Eller, for instance, offers expansive views over the Moselle river bend and surrounding vineyards. The best season for mountaineering in Ediger-Eller is typically spring and autumn. During these times, the weather is generally mild, and the vineyards offer beautiful scenery, either in bloom or with vibrant autumn colors. Summer can be very warm, especially on the exposed slopes of the Calmont, while winter conditions can make some routes, particularly the Klettersteig, hazardous due to ice or snow.
For the Calmont Klettersteig, sturdy footwear with good grip is essential. Given the 'partly alpine challenges,' a head for heights is crucial. While not strictly a via ferrata requiring full climbing gear, the route is secured with steel cables, ladders, steps, and pegs. It's always wise to carry water, snacks, sun protection, and appropriate clothing for changing weather conditions.
