The special highlight The Poppenbecker Kreuz is a richly decorated, late Gothic memorial cross from the late 15th century in the hamlet of Poppenbeck near Havixbeck in Münsterland. It is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic stone crosses in the region and is now a listed monument. Key featuresMaterial and dimensions: The free-standing cross is about 4.30 meters high and was made entirely of regional Baumberger sandstone.Design: The octagonal shaft forks upwards. In the niche in the center of the cross is a small, double-sided figure of St. James the Greater (patron saint of pilgrims) with a shell, pilgrim's bag, and flask. Below it kneels the figure of a praying knight. Coat of arms: The cross bears the coats of arms of the von Bevern family (three lions and two zigzag bars). The historical legendAccording to the inscription, the cross was erected in the year 1487. It commemorates the knight Sweder (Swer) von Bevern from the House of Havixbeck. According to tradition, the knight was seriously injured during a campaign against the Turks. He prayed to be allowed to see his homeland one last time before his death. The miracle happened: He survived the long journey back to Münsterland, but collapsed and died of exhaustion on St. Anthony's Day exactly where the cross stands today – within sight of his home village. Location and tourismThe monument stands in a rural area on the country road (L 581) from Havixbeck towards Billerbeck. As it is located directly on a section of the Westphalian Way of St. James and on the edge of the Baumberge hiking region, it is a popular destination for cyclists and hikers.
