The mosaic bench at the entrance to Landgoed Nienoord belongs to the national art and social connection objects project Social Sofa, which was conceived in 2005 by Dutch comedian and artist Karin Bruers: “Bringing people together and combating loneliness”. It is a 2.24-meter long, approximately 1700 to 2000 kg heavy concrete outdoor bench in the shape of a chaise longue, covered with thousands of small mosaic tiles. The concept grew into a national and international phenomenon where local volunteers, neighbors, or municipalities jointly mosaic the bench to increase the livability and mutual connection in the neighborhood or at a public meeting place. The bench at Nienoord is registered in Leek (municipality Westerkwartier) as part of this broad national initiative.
