The name Blariacum is not an original Roman toponym, but a Latinization from the era of humanism. The parish of Blerick consisted of three residential areas, called rotten, very early on. First, there was the current center of Blerick plus some buildings on the Nieuwborg and the Horsterweg. This part was called the Dorp, Blerick or Maes-Blerick. In addition, there was the Hout-Blericker rot and the Boekender rot. The number of inhabitants of Blerick rose from less than 700 to over 2,200 between 1450 and 1875. Blerick, like Venlo, belonged to the Overkwartier of Gelre or Spanish Upper Gelre. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the entire area around Venlo was occupied by Prussian troops, and thus remained German as part of Prussian Upper Gelre for about a century. However, Venlo itself fell into Dutch hands. Source and more information: Wikipedia

Blerick (in the regional language: Blierik) is a district of the municipality of Venlo in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located on the west bank of the Maas opposite the city of Venlo. Blerick is located between the A73 and the A67 and the district has 27,380 inhabitants (CBS). In terms of population, it is the largest district of the municipality of Venlo, after the city centre of Venlo itself. In terms of surface area, the Blerick district is the largest in the municipality. The district consists of the centres of Blerick, Hout-Blerick and de Boekend, plus the industrial estates under the collective name Trade Ports. The name Blerick is derived from Blariaco, a Roman settlement. This toponym appears on the famous Peutinger map, a Roman travel map from the third or fourth century. The exact location of this Roman settlement has not (yet) been determined. Given Roman finds, Hout-Blerick and Craijelheide are particularly suitable, but the Kazerneterrein is also a possibility.
