Between Drunen and Waalwijk lies De Baardwijksche Overlaat. A 48-hectare wooded and water-rich nature reserve at the foot of the Loonse and Drunense Dunes. The large system of dikes served from 1766 to 1911 to hold back enemy armies. The area was originally used to collect water from the Maas during floods. It already existed in the 15th century as an enormous closed complex of dikes; the Grote or Hollandse Waard. It was precisely because of this enormous size that things went wrong in 1421. During the second St. Elizabeth's flood, the sea flowed all the way to Heusden. To repair the situation, several side dikes were built near Drunen. Around 1766, the water actually became the comrade of the people of Brabant. The system – with the inundation locks that had been constructed in the meantime – was given the function of a water line: the Baardwijksche Overlaat. This remained the case until 1911! www.zuiderwaterlinie.nl
