The name 'Zooislagen' can be traced back to the so-called dike breaches, places where water from the Maas came through the dike, creating a 'mess' on the other side. This narrow strip houses two old wheels between the Bossche Sloot and the polder ditch 'Zooislagen en Buitendijkseloop' that flows into the Groenendaalse Wetering north of Haarsteeg along the Engelermeer and the Voordijk. The Sompen en Zooislagen nature reserve is also located there. (Not accessible) 'Sompen' refers to the marshy subsoil, caused by the Maas that used to burst its banks. It is a location with history. Boats used to sail here to a then very lively harbour in Haarsteeg. There was also a fort, as part of the Zuiderwaterlinie to protect nearby Heusden.
