June 21, 2025, St. Andreas Church, Riede

Beautiful Romanesque church with valuable ceiling paintings. Anyone entering the interior of St. Andrew's Church, the oldest part of which dates back to the 13th century, will be fascinated by the frescoes in the vaults. The 14th-century frescoes in the chancel are impressive for their colorful and compositional design. Scenes from the story of paradise can be found here, as well as images of heaven and hell. In the center sits Christ the Judge of the World, judging who will be consigned to the Heavenly Jerusalem and who will be consigned to the fires of hell. Devils and angels can be seen escorting the blessed to the Eternal City or, on the other hand, transporting kings, princes, and criminals to the abyss of hell. In addition to the frescoes, the baptismal font (13th century), the crucifix, and the colorful pulpit from 1647 are the outstanding pieces of the Ried brick church. The pulpit is carved on a hexagonal floor plan. It consists of coffered individual panels with protruding corner columns. The pulpit is capped at the bottom by veiling and rests on a wooden column. It depicts the four evangelists, and the central coat of arms displays the founder's coat of arms of the Langen Parcow family. Source: https://www.mittelweser-tourismus.de/poi/st-andreaskirche-riede

Even without the cap and wings, the old windmill is still an impressive building. You can find it near the main road on the northern edge of the village.

The core of the current, continuously vaulted, early Gothic hall church made of brick dates from the 13th century. The sandstone ashlars are said to come from the previous church from around 1150, which were later used in the lower area and at the corners of the current church. Around 1280, the brick church was extended to the north by the "olle Bichtkammer" (old sacristy) and around 1320 was given a massive, square tower with a high tent roof. The building was expanded in 1521 by the New Church, which was added to the "ollen Bichtkammer" (confessional chamber). This gave the church its cruciform floor plan. In the 19th century the old sacristy was opened to the interior of the nave and a new sacristy was built in the angle between it and the choir.

July 29, 2022, Windmill Riede

Windmill Riede A windmill in Riede was first mentioned in a document in 1579. It was a post mill with only one grinding cycle. According to an old directory from the Syke office, 1,240 hundredweight of rye were ground in one year. The miller was entitled to the twentieth part as a mill butcher (milling fee). In 1780, the local administration leased it to the miller Claus Hinrich Whlke for hereditary interest. He once paid 500 thalers and the annual inheritance interest of 112 thalers for the mill with accessories, the miller's apartment, the garden and the meadow. In addition to the right of use, he had the right to pass on the mill. Whlke's successor was Müller Heineke. He was already grinding 9,600 hundredweight of rye per year. In 1868, Müller Michael Ahrens from Sstedt became the owner and in 1872 he replaced the post mill with a three-story, solid brick gallery Dutchman with a codend. In strong winds she managed 30 hundredweight of grain per hour in second gear and 20 hundredweight in first gear. However, it was still impossible to compete with the modern, electrically operated large mills. Müller Wilhelm Meyerholz, whose father had married an Ahrens daughter, stopped operating the windmill in 1964 and continued to grind with an electric drive for a few years. In 1969 the mill head was sold to Haben near Bremerhaven. In 2001, Antje Martsch from Riede-Heiligenbruch bought the mill tower and runs a physiotherapy practice in the old miller's house.
