If you take the route north-east, it's a very steep climb up here from the Oberthal side - over 20%. But the views are magnificent and from here on it's practically flat with slight undulations up and down.

Highly recommended as an uphill on hot days as the Niedermattgraben is then pleasantly cool. Too boring as a descent.

At this point is a normal rest area, but also a not very ordinary one. Namely the Naurfreundehaus Ämmital. Here you can eat or stay overnight.
