A excellent example of a traditional seaside pier, with all the trimmings. For.in just to find the old fashioned penny machines

Remains of a small ruined castle, mainly an impressive gatehouse and some adjoining curtain wall. In private ownership so not accessible.

This was once the old Southwold Victorian Cottage Hospital which has been recently repurposed. It is now the home to Southwold Library, the Geography Fieldwork Academy and two community businesses – Old Hospital Nursery and The Canteen, a farm to fork café. The Old Hospital has been redesigned into a beautiful and environmentally sustainable space to meet the needs of the local community. The Canteen is a nice open bright space with seating in and outside. There is a breakfast and lunch menu with plenty to choose from including excellent coffee and a plethora of sweet treats to choose from for those with a sweet tooth. opening times are 9am till 4pm Tuesday through till Saturday. An excellent stop away from the main high street with those all important bike racks. Check the website out for more information including the story of the Hospital and the clubs and groups that run alongside the Canteen https://www.oldhospitalhub.co.uk/canteen

Mettingham Castle is a fortified manor house that was created in the 14th Century. Given to monks to create a college, after the dissolution of the monasteries it was sold into private hands. From here, you can see the Gatehouse only, but it's in very good condition thanks to English Heritage. You can't get close to the building, but it's an impressive site nonetheless.

The Locks Inn occupies a riverside setting at the end of the navigable section of River Waveney. Having almost closed down in 2020, today it is a community-run establishment with over 1,500 shareholders! It serves a range of good pub grub and roasts on sundays.

November 8, 2023, Bungay Castle

The Grade I-listed Norman Bungay Castle became the seat of the Bigod family, allies of King William during the conquest of 1066. The Bigods were charismatic leaders among the barons and oversaw the construction of the keep in the latter half of the 12th century. Today, Bungay Castle is an impressive ruin, with its two huge gate towers still intact. However, throughout 2023, the castle was closed for restorations.
