A very nice little place. The free car park is very central and spacious. The entrance height is stated as 1.95m. In our case, the height bar was set aside and therefore open.

A 2 km climb (the last kilometer is very steep and muddy across the sheep pasture) and over and under fences. The effort is only worth it in good weather, because the view is magnificent. Far inland and towards the coast over Rathlin Island to Scotland.

One of the real classic seacliff climbing areas with decades of histors and the tradiitonal climbing meet-up on the first weekend in June.

Yes, there are several options for beginners. The area offers a good mix of difficulties, with about half of the trails rated as easy. These routes, like the View of Ballycastle โ View of Rathlin Island loop, typically involve less elevation and are shorter, making them a great introduction to the coastal scenery.
The spring and summer months, from April to September, generally offer the most pleasant hiking conditions with longer daylight hours and milder weather. However, the Causeway Coast is beautiful year-round. If you hike in autumn or winter, be prepared for more unpredictable weather, including wind and rain, and ensure you have appropriate waterproof gear and footwear.
Yes, the region has several loop trails so you can end your walk where you started. For a challenging circular hike with significant elevation, consider the Ballycastle to Knocklayd route. For a much longer and demanding day out, the View of Ballycastle โ View of Rathlin Island loop from Ballintoy offers an extensive exploration of the coastline.
Many trails in the area are suitable for walking with a dog, but rules can vary. In areas with livestock, such as sheep, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. Some nature reserves, like Breen Forest, may have specific regulations to protect wildlife. Always check for local signage at the trailhead before letting your dog off-lead.
For a family outing, Drum Manor Forest Park is an excellent choice. It features way-marked trails through gardens and around a lake, plus a play area and picnic facilities. Breen Forest also offers easier, sheltered woodland walks that are enjoyable for all ages.
Yes, the area is rich in history. A popular option is the walk to Kinbane Castle, a 16th-century ruin on a dramatic headland. You can also explore Breen Forest, which is a remnant of ancient woodland and contains archaeological sites. For a shorter but steep climb, the Knocklayd from Drumavoyle Road trail leads to a summit with historical cairns.
Access to most trailheads is easiest by car. Popular locations like the Giant's Causeway and major forest parks have dedicated car parks, though they can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. For some roadside trailheads, parking is limited, so arriving early is recommended. Always park considerately and do not block access.
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential, as the terrain can be uneven and boggy, especially after rain. The weather on the Causeway Coast can change rapidly, so dressing in layers and packing a waterproof jacket and trousers is highly recommended, even on a clear day. Also, bring water, snacks, and a fully charged phone.
The nearby towns and villages, such as Ballycastle, Portrush, and Bushmills, offer a great selection of pubs and cafes to relax in after your walk. You'll find traditional pubs serving hearty meals and local ales, as well as charming cafes for coffee and cake, all within a short drive from the main hiking areas.
The entire Causeway Coast is renowned for its scenery. The cliff-top paths on the Fairhead Loch Na Crannรณige Walk provide spectacular views over the sea towards Rathlin Island. For panoramic inland views, the summit of Knocklayd is hard to beat. The dramatic setting of Dunluce Castle and the unique geology of the Giant's Causeway are also must-see scenic highlights.
The hiking routes in this region are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of over 4.5 stars.
