September 26, 2025, Randalstown Heritage Houses

A row of terraced houses just outside the town of Randalstown. An important military location, these houses could've been used as barracks or staff housing. The symmetry of these houses is very pleasing as you ride past.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any family-friendly walks near Drumkeeran?

Yes, the area offers several options suitable for families. The Rarh loop from Randalstown is a short and easy walk that's great for all ages. For something a bit different, the Acres Lake Floating Boardwalk in nearby Drumshanbo is a unique 600-meter stroll over the water, which kids often enjoy.

What are some good circular or loop walks in the area?

The region has several excellent loop walks. The Aughacashel Loop is an easy 3-kilometer trail perfect for a quick outing. For a more moderate challenge with rewarding views, the Tullylacken Loop is a 10-kilometer trail on the foothills of Sliabh an Iarainn that follows quiet forest tracks.

Can I bring my dog on the hiking trails around Drumkeeran?

Many of the forest tracks and trails managed by Coillte are suitable for walking with dogs, but they should be kept on a lead, especially near farmland or where wildlife is present. Always check local signage at the trailhead for specific rules, as regulations can vary.

Are there any waterfalls to see on a hike near Drumkeeran?

Yes, the Scardan Waterfall is a popular local spot with beautiful views. While not directly on a long hiking trail, it's easily accessible and a great addition to a day of exploring the outdoors in the region. The nearby Glencar Waterfall is another famous and picturesque option.

What should I pack for a hike in County Leitrim?

The weather in Leitrim can be unpredictable. It's essential to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots. Pack layers of clothing, including a waterproof jacket and trousers, even if the day starts sunny. Also bring water, snacks, a fully charged phone, and a map of your route.

Where can I find a good pub for a meal or drink after a hike?

Drumkeeran and the surrounding villages have several traditional pubs where you can relax after your walk. While we can't recommend specific establishments, you'll find welcoming options in the village center to enjoy a well-deserved pint and a bite to eat.

What are the parking options for the main hiking trails?

Most of the main trailheads, such as those for the Sliabh an Iarainn Way loops and in Drumkeeragh Forest, have designated car parks. These can be small, so it's a good idea to arrive early, especially on weekends or during peak season, to secure a spot.

Are the trails accessible by public transport?

Accessing trailheads directly via public transport can be challenging in this rural area. Bus services connect to Drumkeeran, but you may need to arrange a local taxi to get to the start of more remote trails like those on Sliabh an Iarainn. It's best to check bus timetables in advance.

What kind of wildlife might I see while hiking?

The varied landscape of forests, mountains, and loughs supports a range of wildlife. On the slopes of Sliabh an Iarainn, you might spot foxes, hares, and badgers. The area is also a habitat for birds of prey, including the impressive peregrine falcon.

Are there any challenging mountain hikes available?

Yes, the main challenge is the ascent of Sliabh an Iarainn (Iron Mountain), which rises to 585 meters. The trek to the summit is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the west and midlands of Ireland. The terrain can be rugged, so proper preparation and navigation skills are recommended.

What is the Miner's Way and Historical Trail?

The Miner's Way and Historical Trail is a long-distance path that passes through the area. The section near Drumkeeran is relatively flat with short climbs, making it accessible for most hillwalkers. It winds through tranquil countryside and around Lough Allen, offering a glimpse into the region's mining past.

Are there any shorter hikes for a quick walk?

For a shorter but scenic walk, consider the Randalstown Viaduct loop from Randalstown. It's a pleasant trail that's perfect if you have limited time but still want to experience the local landscape.
