Lepe Beach is part of Lepe Country Park and is a mixture of sand and shingle. With views of the Isle of Wight and a cafe by the car park, this is an excellent place to stop, enjoy the scenery and even have a swim in the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park to start a walk in Exbury or Lepe?

The main starting point for many walks is Lepe Country Park, which has its own car park. It's a popular spot, especially on weekends, so arriving early is a good idea. The park serves as the trailhead for several routes, including coastal and woodland paths.

Are the walking trails around Exbury and Lepe suitable for dogs?

Yes, the area is generally very dog-friendly. The open spaces of Lepe Country Park and the various woodland trails are great for walking with dogs. However, be mindful of seasonal restrictions on beaches and areas with wildlife, especially in the North Solent Site of Special Scientific Interest. Always keep dogs under control, particularly near farmland.

What are the trails like in winter?

Walks in winter offer dramatic coastal views across the Solent. While many paths are accessible year-round, some woodland sections can become quite muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is essential. The coastal paths can be exposed and windy, so be sure to dress in warm layers.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks in the area?

Yes, there are several gentle walks perfect for families. The Lepe House – Lepe Beach loop from West Common is a relatively flat and short option that explores the coastline. Lepe Country Park also has a children's play area and a café, making it a great base for a family day out.

Which walks offer the best sea views?

For spectacular views across the Solent towards the Isle of Wight, choose a trail that follows the coastline. The Lepe Beach – Lepe Lookout and Lighthouse loop from Langley is a great choice, as it runs directly along the shingle beach and through Lepe Country Park, offering constant coastal scenery.

What kind of terrain should I expect on the trails?

The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter shingle beaches and coastal paths that can be tide-dependent, well-defined tracks through peaceful woodlands, and paths across open fields. Most routes are relatively flat with gentle gradients, though some woodland sections can be uneven and muddy.

Can I get to the walking routes using public transport?

Public transport options to Lepe and Exbury are limited, as it's a rural area. The most convenient way to access the trailheads is by car. If you are relying on public transport, you may need to take a bus to a nearby village and then walk or take a taxi to your starting point.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Exbury and Lepe?

The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.5 stars from over 550 reviews. Hikers often praise the beautiful mix of coastal and woodland scenery, the clear views of the Isle of Wight, and the generally easy, well-marked paths.

Are there any circular walks available?

Yes, circular walks are very common here. A great option is the Lepe Lookout and Lighthouse – Lepe Beach loop from West Common, which provides a varied experience of both coast and country without needing to retrace your steps. Most trails starting from Lepe Country Park are designed as loops.

What historical points of interest can I see on a walk?

The coastline around Lepe played a significant role in the D-Day landings during World War II. As you walk along the shore, you can see concrete remains from this period and a memorial to the 4th & 7th Dragoon Guards. An audio tour is also available locally to learn more about this history.

Besides hiking, what else is there to do at Lepe Country Park?

Lepe Country Park is a destination in itself. It offers opportunities for birdwatching in the nature reserve, exploring wildflower meadows, and enjoying the beach. The park also has a café for refreshments, toilets, and a sensory cottage garden, making it a pleasant spot to relax before or after your walk.
