The castle now houses the Fermanagh County Museum, which focuses on the history, culture and natural history of the county.

"continual slur on Irish caving" It's actually only a few hundred metres is accessible and it's total length is thought to be 2km. No where near the longest cave in Ireland. Consider a trip in only if well equipped with a good light and helmet. Alternatively/also consider visiting McKenzies back lounge just down the road. A much drier watering hole. ;)

Enjoy a stroll through this gorgeous landscape belonging to the Belmore Uplands. The area is known for it's fascinating wildlife, the most intriguing being the Irish Hare. You'll know if you've spotted a hare over a rabbit because of their black-tipped ears and long black legs.

Pollnagollum Cave (meaning Hole of the Dove) is the longest cave system in Ireland. The cave system is complex and fascinating and is fed by a tumbling waterfall that topples off a limestone cliff. Watch your stepping here as rocks can be unstable and slippery, and don't forget your camera for some awesome shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the hike to the Croaghaun summit?

The hike to the summit of Croaghaun on Achill Island is a strenuous and challenging endeavor recommended for hikers with a good level of fitness. The trail is steep and demanding, typically taking between four to six hours to complete. The reward is an unparalleled panoramic view from the top.

What are the main attractions on the Croaghaun hike?

The primary draw is the spectacular sea cliffs, which are the highest in Ireland. At 688 meters, they offer a sheer drop into the Atlantic. Hikers will also discover a stunning glacial lake, Lough Bunafreva, and can find the remains of a British Royal Airforce bomber that crashed during WWII.

How high are the Croaghaun sea cliffs?

The sea cliffs on the western face of Croaghaun stand at an impressive 688 meters (2,257 feet). This makes them over three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher and the highest in Ireland.

Are dogs allowed on the Croaghan trails?

While the area is open, it is active farmland with sheep grazing freely. For the safety of the livestock and your pet, it is strongly recommended to keep dogs on a lead at all times.

Are there any easier or family-friendly walks in the area?

The main summit hike is not suitable for young children. For a less strenuous but beautiful experience, the nearby Keem Bay offers a picturesque sheltered beach. You could also consider the Belmore Forest loop via Pollnagollum Cave, which is an easy walk through woodland scenery.

What is the best time of year to climb Croaghaun?

The best time to hike Croaghaun is during the spring and summer months, from April to September. Clear, dry days are essential for both safety on the steep terrain and for experiencing the spectacular views. Always check the weather forecast before setting out, as conditions can change rapidly.

How do I get to the trailhead for Croaghaun?

Most hikes to the Croaghaun summit begin near Keem Bay, on the western end of Achill Island. There is a car park at Keem Bay, which serves as a convenient starting point. The route from here is an unmarked, open-mountain trail.

Is there a circular walk available?

Yes, there are several loop options. A popular one starts from Keem Bay and goes up to Achill Head before looping back. For a different kind of loop, the Race Course Lough loop from Enniskillen offers an easy walk around a scenic lake.

What should I pack for a day hike on Croaghaun?

Essential items include sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, layered clothing, waterproof rain gear, a map and compass or GPS device, and plenty of water and food. The route is exposed and weather can change quickly, so it's vital to be prepared for all conditions.

Are there other places named Croghan for hiking in Ireland?

Yes. While Croaghaun on Achill Island is the most famous for its cliffs, you can also visit Croghan Hill in County Offaly, the remains of an extinct volcano. Additionally, Croghan Mountain on the Wicklow/Wexford border has 15km of trails through the Raheenleagh Wind Farm, offering great views. You can find more information at visitarklow.ie.

Where can I find a good walk that includes some local history?

For a walk that combines scenery with local heritage, the Enniskillen Castle loop from Enniskillen is a great option. This easy trail takes you along town paths near the historic castle.
