We walked past here in September 2025 but sadly the waterfall was totally dry and not running even tho it had been a very rainy week. A lot of the vegetation around it has also been cut.

High on the Greensand Ridge, not far from the iconic Leith Hill, Coldharbour is a picturesque little hamlet. The Plough Inn is a great place to unwind after a ride. It serves excellent gastropub fayre, has a shop selling local produce and also has accommodation.

Considering the recent wet weather, this was dry and fenced off, totally pointless location

Absolutely. A great option for a family outing is the Leith Hill Tower and Viewpoint – Leith Hill Tower loop from Coldharbour. It's a relatively short walk at just over 3 km and leads to the impressive Leith Hill Tower, which is always a hit with kids.
Most trails in the Surrey Hills are dog-friendly, with plenty of woodland paths for them to explore. However, you may encounter areas with livestock, especially in open fields, where it's important to keep your dog on a lead. Always check for local signage.
The trails are generally well-maintained footpaths and bridleways. You'll find a mix of surfaces, from paved sections to natural woodland tracks. After rain, some paths, particularly in the lower-lying wooded areas, can become muddy, so waterproof hiking shoes are recommended.
Yes, most of the popular routes are circular, allowing you to start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A good example of a moderate circular hike is the Leith Hill & The Duke's Warren loop from Coldharbour, which offers a varied 7 km journey through the woods.
The terrain is classic Surrey Hills: a mix of rolling hills, dense ancient woodlands, and open heathland. While there are some steeper climbs, such as the ascents to Leith Hill and Holmbury Hill, many trails follow gentler gradients through valleys and along riverbanks.
For those seeking a longer challenge, the Holmbury Hill Viewpoint – Leith Hill Tower and Viewpoint loop from Coldharbour is a great choice. This 13.8 km route connects two of the highest points in the area and takes you through some of the best scenery the Surrey Hills have to offer.
The region is famous for its viewpoints. Leith Hill is the highest point in Southeast England and offers panoramic views from its tower. Holmbury Hill is another fantastic spot with far-reaching vistas. Many trails are designed to incorporate these stunning viewpoints.
Yes, many routes are conveniently located near villages with pubs and cafes. The village of Coldharbour, a common starting point for Leith Hill hikes, has a well-regarded local pub. Another option is the Tanhouse Farm Shop – View of the Lake loop from Capel, which, as the name suggests, passes by a farm shop with a cafe.
For a day hike, you should bring water, snacks, a fully charged phone, and a map or GPS device. Given the variable English weather, a waterproof jacket is always a good idea. Sturdy, comfortable footwear is essential, especially as some paths can be uneven or muddy.
There are several car parks that serve as popular trailheads, such as those around Leith Hill and in the village of Coldharbour. These can get very busy, especially on weekends and holidays, so it's advisable to arrive early to secure a spot.
