From the west you climb this unpaved road winding through the beautiful green landscape up towards the village of Ruhondo. Especially in the second part of the climb you regularly have a view of the lake of the same name below you. This makes the climb extra beautiful.

Without any explanation or signs you can easily miss this beautiful waterfall. Luckily I didn't during my bike ride on this quietly winding dirt road. Just off the main road and worth a visit.

Africa Rising Cycling Center is the home of the Rwandan national cycling team and therefore an important hub for cycling in Africa and Rwanda in particular. It has no public function, but cyclists can go there and even stay there or plan a training camp. You will find accommodation, a dining room and a pump track there. More information via their website: https://arcc.rw/

Training centre of the national cycling team of Rwanda. Also a great place to stay overnight with charming houses in a beautifully landscaped garden

At this location, each time I passed since 2012 a boat has reliably been there, ready to take me to the other side for a small fee. But Chris de Burgh's line "Dont pay the ferry man until he gets you to the other side" never worked for me in Rwanda. I always pay upfront - which is ok too, for the nice rides I get.

Rwanda offers a diverse network of over 35 mountain bike trails. These routes cater to various skill levels, with about half being moderate and the other half presenting a more difficult challenge, traversing the country's unique landscapes.
The dry seasons, typically from June to September and December to February, offer the most optimal conditions for mountain biking in Rwanda. During these periods, trails are less muddy, making for a more enjoyable and accessible experience across the country's varied terrain.
While many trails in Rwanda are rated moderate to difficult due to the country's hilly terrain, there are options for less experienced riders. For instance, the 'Village Cycling around Musanze' offers an easier, shorter ride (1-2 hours, 25 km) perfect for exploring local communities and scenery. Lakeside trails around Lake Kivu also tend to be flatter and more relaxed.
Mountain bike trails in Rwanda feature highly varied terrain. You'll encounter everything from the challenging climbs and descents of volcanic regions like the Virunga Mountains, to the ubiquitous rolling hills that define much of the country. Trails also traverse dense montane rainforests, savannahs, and serene lakeside paths along Lake Kivu, offering a rich diversity of riding experiences.
Yes, the iconic Congo Nile Trail is a major highlight for long-distance mountain biking in Rwanda. This multi-day route stretches approximately 280 km along the scenic shores of Lake Kivu, connecting Gisenyi and Kibuye. It offers a unique journey through banana fields, small villages, and stunning waterscapes.
Yes, you can find trails that lead to or pass by waterfalls, particularly in the forested regions. Nyungwe Forest National Park is known for its cascading waterfalls, and some trails in the Volcanoes National Park area also offer waterfall hikes. For example, the Mpenge waterfall – Winding ascent to Ruhondo loop from Musanze route includes a waterfall feature.
Rwanda's mountain bike trails offer numerous landmarks and stunning viewpoints. You can experience panoramic views of Kigali from routes like Bumbogo Saddle – View of Kigali loop from Kimihurura or View of Kigali loop from Kigali. The Virunga Mountains provide spectacular scenic views of the volcanic highlands. Other notable natural features include Mount Bisoke Crater Lake and the vast Nyungwe Forest National Park.
For families, the 'Village Cycling around Musanze' offers a shorter, easier ride suitable for beginners. Additionally, the flat and picturesque lakeside trails around Lake Kivu are ideal for relaxed rides through small villages, providing a pleasant experience for families looking to enjoy the scenery together.
While general mountain biking on public trails typically doesn't require specific permits, accessing certain protected areas like Volcanoes National Park or Nyungwe Forest National Park for activities beyond cycling (e.g., gorilla trekking, canopy walk) will require permits and fees. It's advisable to check with local tour operators or park authorities for the most current requirements, especially if your route enters a national park.
The mountain bike trails in Rwanda are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.7 stars from over 30 reviews. Reviewers often praise the diverse and challenging terrain, the breathtaking landscapes, and the unique cultural interactions experienced along the routes. Many appreciate the opportunities to explore volcanic regions, dense forests, and serene lakeside paths.
Yes, many mountain bike routes in Rwanda are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include The Bridge – Mount Jali from the South loop from Kibagabaga, Bumbogo Saddle – View of Kigali loop from Kimihurura, and View of Kigali loop from Kigali. These loops offer varied distances and difficulties, often providing panoramic views.
While mountain biking, you might encounter various bird species, especially in areas like Nyungwe Forest National Park, which is a birdwatcher's paradise. In Akagera National Park, which features savannahs, you could spot larger wildlife during a safari, though mountain biking is typically restricted to specific zones. For unique wildlife encounters like gorilla or golden monkey trekking, you would need to participate in guided tours within Volcanoes National Park.
Accommodation options are available near many popular mountain biking areas. For instance, near Volcanoes National Park and the Musanze region, you'll find various lodges. Along the Congo Nile Trail, there are guesthouses and small hotels in towns like Gisenyi and Kibuye. In Kigali, numerous hotels cater to different budgets. Some specific lodges include Jangwe Lodge and Umutuzo Lodge.
