The house known as Porter's Mill stands on a tributary of the Severn, with the actual mill on the opposite side of the road. The building is of half-timber work plastered, and is entered by a wood porch, with 18th-century moulded balusters fitted in the sides. There is a small hall, with stair and large fireplace on the left, and above the latter are the royal arms encircled by the Garter and flanked by the crowned initials E. R. One of the rooms contains a 17th-century plaster ceiling of interlacing design, enriched with fleurs de lis, crowns, fruit, Prince of Wales' feathers, mermaids, &c. There is also some good moulded oak panelling ornamented with lions and crowns. The short stair has good twisted balusters.

The landscape is defined by the tranquil River Severn, with many trails following its banks. You'll also walk through flat pastureland and encounter a series of pools and wetlands, which are former gravel pits now transformed into important habitats for wildlife. The terrain is generally level, making for pleasant and accessible walking.
Most trails in the area are rated as easy or moderate. The terrain is predominantly flat, especially along the river and canal paths. While there are over 300 routes to choose from, the vast majority are suitable for regular walkers, with very few technically difficult sections.
Yes, loop trails are very common in the Grimley area. Many routes are designed to start and end in the same place, often exploring a section of the River Severn before returning through nearby fields and meadows. A good example is the Hawford Canal – View of the River Severn loop from Bevere Lock, which combines both canal and riverside scenery.
Many trails around Grimley are suitable for walking with a dog. A popular dog-friendly spot is The Knapp and Papermill Nature Reserve, which is highly regarded by locals for its well-maintained paths. As always, keep your dog under control, especially near farmland and wildlife habitats like the Grimley wetlands.
The region offers numerous easy walks perfect for a family outing. The terrain is mostly flat, and you can find many shorter routes. Paths along the canals are particularly level and safe. For a slightly longer but still manageable option, consider the View of the River Severn – Hawford Canal loop from Bevere Lock, which offers varied scenery without significant climbs.
Absolutely. The network of pools, marshes, and the proximity to the River Severn make Grimley a haven for birdlife. The wetlands attract a wide variety of species, including Greylag Geese, Mute Swans, Little Egrets, and Cormorants. The area provides rich habitats that support diverse bird populations throughout the year.
Yes, the Severn Way, a long-distance footpath, passes through the area, offering opportunities for more extensive hikes. You can join sections of it for a day walk or incorporate it into a longer trek. There are also local circular routes of 10 miles or more that tour the surrounding villages and countryside.

Waterproof footwear is highly recommended. While the trails are mostly flat, paths along the River Severn and through the marshy wetlands can be muddy, especially after rain. Otherwise, standard comfortable walking clothes suitable for the season are appropriate.
Parking is often available in the villages where walks begin, such as Grimley, Hallow, or Holt. Some dedicated nature reserves, like the popular Knapp and Papermill Nature Reserve, have their own car parks, though spaces can be limited. It's best to arrive early on sunny weekends.
