Lovely, easy gravel paths. Can get busy at weekends with walkers etc, so can be a bit slow going. But early morning, weekdays etc usually all pretty good.

Yes, there are nearly 200 marked hiking routes in the area. These range from short, easy strolls through the countryside to more challenging long-distance paths, offering plenty of options for all fitness levels.
The trails are highly regarded by the komoot community, with over 4,000 hikers exploring the region. Reviewers often praise the quiet, rolling agricultural landscapes and the well-maintained footpaths that connect the historic ironstone villages.
The area is excellent for circular walks. Many trails are designed as loops that start and end in the same village, guiding you through varied scenery. A great example is the Dingly Dell Wooden Bridge loop from Broughton, which offers a moderate walk through the local countryside.
Most countryside paths are suitable for dog walking, but it's important to be mindful of local rules. You'll be walking through active farmland, so always keep your dog on a lead, especially near livestock. Also, be sure to clean up after your pet to keep the trails pleasant for everyone.
Yes, the region has many trails suitable for families. For an easy outing, consider the Forest Path loop from Finedon. It's a relatively flat and short walk, making it ideal for little legs. Nearby Stanwick Lakes also offers over seven miles of accessible footpaths perfect for a family day out.
The Nene Valley is a fantastic area for wildlife spotting. Titchmarsh Nature Reserve, accessible via the Nene Way, is a haven for birdwatchers. In winter, you might see goosander and wigeon. During warmer months, look for butterflies and damselflies along the riverbanks.
Orlingbury is conveniently located near two major long-distance paths. The Nene Way follows the River Nene for over 100 miles, while the Brampton Valley Way offers a 14-mile flat route along a former railway line, perfect for a full day of walking.
Absolutely. The River Nene provides many opportunities for waterside walks. For a route that combines river paths with lakes and nature reserves, the Stanwick Lakes Bird Hide β Higham Ferrers Lock loop from Isham is an excellent, albeit challenging, choice that fully explores the local waterways.
The region is rich in history. Many trails connect charming villages built from local ironstone, featuring historic churches like St. Mary's in Orlingbury. You'll also pass by grand country houses such as Orlingbury Hall and discover archaeological sites at places like Stanwick Lakes.
The terrain is best described as gently rolling. You'll encounter some gentle hills and inclines, especially on routes like the Dingly Dell Wooden Bridge loop from Pytchley, but there are also very flat options, particularly along the Brampton Valley Way and around the lakes in the Nene Valley.
The landscape is classic Northamptonshire countryside. Expect to walk through open agricultural fields, along quiet country lanes, and through woodlands. The Nene Valley adds broad, flat river meadows and lakes that are now important wildlife habitats.
Yes, several trails incorporate local nature reserves. The Nene Way footpath runs directly through Titchmarsh Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. You can also explore Irchester Country Park, a former ironstone quarry now covered in woodland trails, and Stanwick Lakes, a 750-acre reserve with extensive paths.
