Tips from the Community

June 9, 2026, Dunkelsteinerwald Countryside

In 2021, the Austrian Alpine Club honored the 100th birthday of Reinhold Stecher, Bishop of Innsbruck, with a special campaign. A total of four different quotes from the beloved spiritual leader, who throughout his life was closely connected to the mountains and nature – in which he saw God's creation – were written on iron plaques in a limited edition and given away for donations. The "Dunkelsteiner Wald" landscape, marked as a highlight in the komoot system, is in my opinion well suited to recall one of the quotes selected for the anniversary: "Silence is the invitation to deeper humanity."

The Bildstock (created around 1629), of exceptional height, stands at the exit of Paudorf towards Kleinwien on the Zellerweg. A brick pillar rests on a prismatic base and, above a wide, richly articulated cornice, carries a tabernacle with four round-arched niches between small corner pillars. On the roadside, there is a small square niche that was added later. The tiled roof bears a richly decorated iron cross.

Göttweig Abbey is often called the "Austrian Montecassino" - and as soon as you stand in front of it, you understand why. It sits majestically on a 422-meter-high hill on the eastern edge of the Wachau, directly opposite Krems and Mautern. The abbey, as we see it today, is the result of a gigantic reconstruction after a devastating fire in 1718. The famous architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt (who also designed the Belvedere Palace in Vienna) planned a huge, palace-like complex. Due to a lack of funds, however, only about two-thirds of the original plan was completed - which does not make the complex any less impressive.

The historic building stands in Klein-Wien, a district of the municipality of Furth bei Göttweig, on Altmannistraße. It bears the inscription "Johann Nosko" and is currently associated with Erwin Nosko GmbH. The property appears quite deserted at present. The inscription refers to former owners of the Nosko family and makes the building a silent witness to local history, conveying an impression of the family's former life and work in this part of Klein-Wien.

The Church of St. Blasien in Klein-Wien, a district of the municipality of Furth near Göttweig, is a small, historically significant church at the foot of Göttweig Mountain. Its origins date back to the 11th century, while the current building was constructed in the 15th century in the Gothic style. Surrounded by a small woodland cemetery, the church is picturesquely situated on the edge of the forest and offers a quiet place for contemplation. With its simple architecture and the preserved frescoes inside, St. Blasien is one of the most atmospheric churches in the Krems Valley and is closely linked to the spiritual history of the region around Göttweig.
