Excellent Sausage Rolls. Always worth a stop when passing.

A nice example of a medieval building with considerable 19th century modifications. A highlight is the ornate alabaster tomb to Sir Edmund de Thorpe who died in 1417 in Normandy.

The wood does not allow dogs, as we found out when we got there!

Super cafe!! Suitable for cyclists. The track is about 100 yards and fine to bike down. Unless you have 10k superbike

Well set up for the cycling crowds with proper saddle rail bike parking (no scratching your frame against a stand, or bending your spokes in a wheel holder). Only downside is needing to cross grass or gravel to reach the cafe. Fairly limited opening hours so best for a lunch stop.

Has one of the most impressive and well maintained of Norfolk's round tower churches, on prominent view across the village bowling green.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the hiking trails around Great Moulton suitable for dogs?

Yes, the area is generally dog-friendly. The public footpaths across the open farmland and through woodlands like Tyrrel's Wood are great for walking with dogs. However, you will be crossing arable land, so be prepared for paths that can be muddy after rain and keep dogs on a lead, especially near any livestock.

Can I find any easy, family-friendly walks in the area?

Definitely. The terrain around Great Moulton is mostly flat, making it accessible for most walkers. For a shorter, easier outing perfect for families, consider the Fairy Tree loop from Gissing. It's just under 5 km and takes a little over an hour, offering a pleasant taste of the local countryside.

Are there any circular walks available?

Yes, many of the best routes in the area are circular. This allows you to start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A great example of a moderate circular hike is the Hiking loop from Tacolneston, which covers about 8.4 km of the surrounding landscape.

What are the parking options for hikers in Great Moulton?

Parking is typically found in villages or at designated spots near trailheads. For many routes, on-street parking in villages like Great Moulton, Hardwick, or Gissing is the most common option. Please park considerately, respecting local residents and ensuring access is not blocked.

How do I get to the Great Moulton trails using public transport?

Reaching the trailheads by public transport can be challenging as the area is quite rural. Bus services connect to some of the larger villages in South Norfolk, but they may be infrequent. The nearest major train station is in Diss, from which you would likely need a taxi to reach the start of a walk. It's best to check local bus timetables in advance.

Are there any pubs on or near the walking routes?

Yes, you can often plan a walk to include a stop at a traditional village pub. The Fox and Hounds in Great Moulton is a popular choice for walkers looking for refreshments after exploring the local footpaths. It's always a good idea to check their opening times before you set off.

What is the landscape like on these hikes?

The hiking experience is defined by variety. You'll encounter the 'Great Moulton Plateau Farmland', which offers a unique sense of openness with vast fields and big skies. This contrasts with walks through enclosed, ancient woodlands like Tyrrel's Wood and Big Wood, which provide a more sheltered and traditional countryside feel.

Are there any long-distance footpaths that pass through the area?

Yes, the Boudicca Way, a 40-mile (64 km) path running from Norwich to Diss, passes through this landscape. You can hike sections of this long-distance trail to experience the region. For a longer day hike, consider the Old Brick Footbridge – Fairy Tree loop from Tivetshall St Mary, which at 13.7 km offers a more substantial challenge.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Great Moulton?

The routes in this area are well-regarded by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the peacefulness of the open farmland and the charm of the ancient woodlands. The mix of expansive views and sheltered forest paths is a frequently mentioned highlight.

What historical or natural points of interest can I see on a walk?

Besides the beautiful natural scenery, you can spot historical landmarks. In Great Moulton village, look for the St. Michael and All Angels church, a Grade I listed building with an impressive 14th-century tower. Across the landscape, remnant oak trees often mark the lines of old field boundaries, offering a glimpse into the area's agricultural past.

How many hiking trails are there to choose from around Great Moulton?

There are over 40 hiking routes to explore in and around Great Moulton. They range from short, easy loops to more moderate, longer trails, offering plenty of options for different fitness levels and time commitments.

What are the trail conditions like?

The trails are mostly well-defined public footpaths and bridleways. Paths through the woodlands are generally clear, sometimes with boardwalks over damp areas. Trails across the farmland can be exposed to the elements and may become muddy and slippery after rainfall, so sturdy, waterproof footwear is recommended.
