If you find yourself in Gloucestershire, Woodchester Mansion in Nympsfield is worth considering. It's an unfinished Gothic revival house with a peculiar story, as construction halted in the mid-1870s, leaving it complete externally but with many interior spaces unfinished. The mansion opens seasonally to the public, and also seasonally houses a cafe. This unique state of preservation, along with a resident bat colony, makes for a rather distinct and thought-provoking visit.

Beautiful trails to choose from whether via lake, woodland or track - rewarding stop off at Henry’s at Woodchester for brunch, tea variations, barista coffee, pastries and cake.. not to mention Stroud Brewery Beers, Oliver’s Fine Cider and Woodchester Valley Wines. Adventure trail for children and adults👌💫

Yes, for a gentle and relatively flat walk, the towpath along the Stroudwater Navigation canal is an excellent choice. It offers a peaceful route through the valleys, passing by historic textile mills and providing opportunities to spot wildlife like kingfishers without any significant climbs.
For a more strenuous hike, consider tackling a section of the Cotswold Way. The Haresfield Beacon & Cotswold Way loop from Painswick is a great example, involving steep ascents up the escarpment that reward you with panoramic views across the Severn Vale.
Stroud has many excellent circular routes. A popular option is the Woodchester Park loop, which takes you through a secluded wooded valley around a series of picturesque lakes. It's a complete circuit, so you end up right where you started.
The area's escarpment offers fantastic viewpoints. For some of the most expansive views, head to Coaley Peak, a well-regarded spot with vistas over the Severn Vale and beyond. The Downham Hill & Cam Peak loop is another route that incorporates climbs to prominent viewpoints.
Most trails in the Stroud area are dog-friendly, but you should be mindful of local regulations. On common lands like Selsley Common and Minchinhampton Common, dogs are welcome but must be kept under control, especially during summer when cattle are grazing freely. Always check for signage regarding leads.
Yes, the Cooper's 'Cheeserolling' Hill & Buckholt Wood loop is a shorter, easier walk that's great for families. It's less than 5 km and explores the famous hill and nearby woodlands without being overly strenuous.
Hiking on these commons offers a unique experience with vast, open grasslands and wide-ranging views. The terrain is relatively high but gently undulating. These areas are Sites of Special Scientific Interest, known for rare wildflowers and butterflies. Be aware that cattle roam freely here, which is a key part of the landscape's charm.
Parking availability varies by trail. For walks on the commons, there are often designated car parks, such as at Selsley Common. For popular spots like Coaley Peak, there is also dedicated parking. For routes starting in villages like Box or Painswick, you may need to use on-street parking, so please park considerately.
