May 1, 2026, Abbot's Porch, Cerne Abbey

The Cerne Abbey Abbot's Porch is a stunning, three-story fragment of history that serves as a grand reminder of the abbey's former glory. It’s the kind of place where you can just sit and admire the intricate stonework and that iconic two-story oriel window. It feels wonderfully peaceful, tucked away at the end of Abbey Street. Since it’s one of the few pieces of the 15th-century monastery still standing, it has a very grounded, quiet presence. It’s perfect for a slow wander when you want to soak up the medieval atmosphere without any rush.

Standing tall since the 1300s, St Mary’s is where you go to feel ancient and slightly judged by stone gargoyles. It boasts a stunning 15th-century tower and a posh stone screen that’s older than your family tree. Don't miss the medieval wall paintings—they’ve survived centuries of damp and hymns. It’s the perfect, holy spot to pray for forgiveness after giggling at the Giant’s nakedness just five minutes up the road. Amen to that!

The River Cerne is the ultimate chill companion, lazily winding its way through the valley. It’s less of a rushing torrent and more of a gentle, crystal-clear murmur that keeps the meadows lush. Perfect for a quick splash or just watching the water-crowfoot sway while you ignore your pedometer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there many circular walks in West Dorset?

Yes, West Dorset has many circular routes that allow you to start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A great example is the Burton Bradstock loop, which offers a mix of coastal and inland scenery. Many trails are designed as loops to provide a varied experience.

What are some good family-friendly hikes in the area?

For a gentle walk suitable for families, consider the Lyme Regis to Uplyme Riverside Walk loop. It's a moderate route but follows a tranquil river valley, offering a peaceful experience away from the steeper coastal climbs. The area around Delph Woods is also a popular choice for families, with its clear stream and well-defined paths.

Can I bring my dog on the trails in West Dorset?

West Dorset is very dog-friendly. Many inland paths and coastal trails welcome dogs, but it's important to check for local signage, especially regarding livestock in fields and restrictions on certain beaches during peak season. Always keep your dog under control, particularly near cliff edges.

Are there any good pub walks in West Dorset?

Many trails in West Dorset pass through charming villages with traditional pubs, making it easy to plan a walk around a lunch stop. The region is well-regarded for its fantastic pubs. A route like the Charmouth & East Beach loop from Lyme Regis starts and ends in a town with numerous options for food and drink after your hike.

How difficult is the hike to Golden Cap?

The climb to Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast, is considered a rewarding challenge. Most routes to the summit are graded as moderate and involve steep ascents. The effort is paid off with panoramic views. The Golden Cap Trust 10 is a popular route that showcases the typical terrain you can expect.

How do I get to the trailheads? Is there parking?

Many popular trailheads, especially those managed by the National Trust, have dedicated car parks. For example, the Lyscombe car park is a convenient starting point for countryside walks with epic views. Some coastal villages have limited parking, so arriving early is recommended in high season. Public transport options are available but may not serve all remote trailheads directly.

Are there any easy-access or less strenuous coastal walks?

While the Jurassic Coast is known for its steep climbs, there are gentler sections. The Burton Bradstock coastal walk from Hive Beach is a moderate option with less dramatic elevation changes compared to other coastal routes. Exploring the areas around river valleys like the Frome also provides flatter, more accessible walking.

What should I pack for a coastal walk in Dorset?

Sturdy walking shoes with good grip are essential, as paths can be steep, uneven, and slippery when wet. The weather can change quickly, so packing waterproofs and extra layers is wise. Also bring water, snacks, a fully charged phone, and a map or GPS device, as mobile signal can be unreliable in some areas.

What do other hikers enjoy about West Dorset?

The region is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Hikers frequently praise the stunning and dramatic views along the South West Coast Path, the mix of challenging coastal climbs and peaceful inland routes, and the well-maintained network of trails.

How many hiking trails are there in West Dorset?

There are over 1,000 hiking routes to explore in West Dorset on komoot. These range from short, easy strolls to challenging multi-day treks, with nearly 500 trails rated as easy and over 500 as moderate, ensuring options for every fitness level.

What are some popular places for hiking in West Dorset?

The Dorset National Landscape is a vast and highly-regarded area encompassing the region's famous cliffs, heathland, and rolling hills. For a more focused coastal experience, the West Dorset Heritage Coast is a top-rated destination. For inland walks, the National Trust's Fontmell and Melbury Downs offer great scenery and well-marked paths.

What is the hiking like in West Dorset compared to East Dorset?

West Dorset is defined by the dramatic, often strenuous, cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, including landmarks like Golden Cap. The terrain is rugged and constantly changing. East Dorset, particularly around the Purbecks, also has stunning coastline with features like Old Harry Rocks, but is often characterized by rolling chalk downlands and extensive heathland, offering a different but equally beautiful hiking experience.
