Penton Hook Lock on the River Thames was opened in 1815 to prevent floodwater to burst through the banks of the River Thames as it tried to carry straight on, thus cutting off Penton Hook Island. After the lock was installed, local farmers used to drive their cattle over the lock to graze. Now the island makes for a nice short walk with picnic benches and great views of the river.

December 6, 2022, Desborough Island

You can hike onto Desborough Island at either the east or west side, over public access bridges. It is a quiet and calm place and walking its perimeter is generally much less busy than the Thames Path. The island was created in the 1930s by the digging of a straight channel to remove a meandering section of the River Thames.

On the river's edge of this wooded island is a 13 bedroom mansion. It was left abandoned for 10 years until it was bought for Β£3m in 2021 so is about to enter into its next phase of life. The island was called Folly Eyot until it was bought by Richard D'Oyly Carte in 1890. He had intended to open it as the 'Savoy on Thames', he also owned the Savoy in London, but was refused a liquor license.
