Chiswick House and Gardens

Highlight • Monument

Chiswick House - a small summer palace in the manner of the Palladian villa Rotunda, erected in the London suburb of Chisik in the 1720s by Count Burlington in collaboration with William Kent.
The villa was designed by Burlington to house his collection of antiques, and not for living, so the building has neither a dining room nor a bedroom. Masonic symbols indicate that in the Chisik House could be held collections of the Masonic lodge, to which belonged its owner.
Having inherited the villa after the Count's death, the Duke of Devonshire instructed James Wyeth to attach two wings to her; they were demolished in 1952. From the projects of Wyeth in Chisik preserved a variety of garden pavilions. The gate was moved in 1738 from Chelsea; they were designed in 1621 by Inigo Jones.
In 1813 on the territory of the Chizik manor a 96-meter greenhouse was built, the largest in England, which is famous for its camellias. The Beatles filmed here a video for the songs "Rain" and "Paperback Writer".

Surprisingly good (like, stop to reduce tyre pressure good) stretch of gravel around Kew Gardens, with really nice views of the Thames.

Some really nice wide stretches, mixed with a few bottlenecks.

It is however, prone to flooding, so avoid after wet weather if you dont fancy dodging puddles.

I’ve found it’s best ridden early (pre-9am) or late after 4/5 because it is very popular with walkers.

It’s a golden little stretch of London gravel, but only at the right time. Choose wisely and enjoy!

Wonderful park, well used by locals. You can no longer go into the dilapidated greenhouses (at the moment?). However, parts of the house can be visited. But did you know that there used to be a real menagerie here? In the early 19th century, Sadi, an elephant lady, lived here. She mastered tricks like holding a broom with her trunk and sweeping the paths 😵‍💫 There were also 4 giraffes. Their keepers had to wear Egyptian clothing. In addition, kangaroos hopped around, a moose stomped on the green, there were emus and monkeys. All the wonderful details can be found here: An Emperor and an Aristocrat's Menagerie | English Heritage https://share.google/kW1GzFWNEQ2FwkRQ5
