Bridge closure: The bridge at Fintele is closed to all traffic until October 2, 2026 due to works. New lock gates are being installed, among other things. I came from the Diksmuide direction, had to turn back and continued cycling along Reninge. I haven't seen the situation on the other side yet (whether you can continue to Veurne, for example)

In 1863, Baron de Coninck de Merckem acquired the Blankaart estate. A castle was built there and a castle park was laid out in the English style. Baron de Coninck de Merckem died in 1895, and his wife inherited his entire estate, including the castle. The castle was so badly destroyed in World War I that only the facade remained. In 1922, it was rebuilt in a smaller form. The castle park was not restored to its original state. During World War II, the castle's roof was destroyed. The conical battlements of the two round towers were not restored. After her husband's death, the owner had the castle rebuilt and made it available in 1959 to the „Volkshogeschool de Blankaart“, an initiative of her sons. The estate was declared a nature reserve in 1978.

The two oil reservoirs were built around 1910 in Kaaskerke to supply Diksmuide with petroleum (lamp oil). During the Battle of the Yser in October 1914, the Germans captured the installation and used the damaged tanks as a strategic lookout post and machine-gun position, aimed at the Belgian trenches near the later Dodengang. The site was the reason for the construction of the Dodengang and contributed to the trench warfare on the Yser front. bron : https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleumtanks_van_Kaaskerke
