August 17, 2026, White Footbridge in Stadspark Lier

The iconic white pedestrian bridges over the pond give Lier's Stadspark a romantic, English feel. And that's no coincidence: the park was originally a private noble pleasure garden. In the first half of the 19th century, plant lover Emmanuel Schram transformed the domain into a lush pleasure garden and arboretum, with exotic trees, a pond, and graceful arched bridges. Everything was laid out in the romantic English landscape style, ideal for a picturesque walk. After the First World War, between 1917 and 1919, the city of Lier bought the domain. The former private garden was redesigned and opened to the public. Today, the white bridges and the pond are still one of the most atmospheric spots in the Stadspark.

Already in the initial plans of 1831, a railway line from Antwerp to Germany was to run via Lier. However, later routes diverted this connection via Mechelen or Grobbendonk and Herentals, much to the displeasure of the Lier city council, which considered the city the obvious gateway to the Kempen region. There was also a long dispute as to whether the line from Lier would be better to run to Kontich or Duffel. The rail connection became concrete when a concession for a Lier-Turnhout railway line was approved by law on May 1, 1853. The first trains ran on the Kontich-Herentals line in mid-March 1855, and the official opening followed on April 19 and 23, 1855 (freight and passenger services respectively).

The St. John's Bridge was destroyed during both World Wars. It was later replaced by the current natural stone arch bridge; the road surface is paved with iron railings. Inventory of Immovable Heritage: Zimmerplein, https://id.erfgoed.net/themas/2689

You can find the Anne Frank tree in this square. A sign was placed near the tree with a quote from Anne Frank's diary of February 23, 1944. Read the full explanation at https://www.lierbelicht.be/anne-frank-boom-geplant-op-sionsplein/
