An 🇧🇪
August 9, 2026, Kasteel van Nieuwerkerken

The Castle of Nieuwerkerken is actually a closed and moated brick farm, dating from the 17th and the first half of the 18th century. The complex is reached via a driveway, alongside which is a brick chapel from the first half of the 18th century, with a rectangular floor plan, covered by a tent roof. The courtyard of the farm is entered via a bridge through a high gatehouse on the south side, which houses a dovecote. This is covered by a mansard roof. To its left is the residential house (1st half of the 18th century) and on the right a large stable. The north side is occupied by a stable, the core of which, given the year, dates from 1648. The west wing is occupied by a possibly former servants' quarters, while the east wing is a barn, bearing the year 1734 on a keystone. This castle farm served as a refuge for the sisters of the Abbey of Nonnenmielen during the closed period.

Nieuwerkerkenaar's Jo Beerden does graffiti and airbrushing, a technique in which he creates artworks with a paint sprayer. The artist received carte blanche from Wim Secretin, owner of All Bikes Wim, to spray a large artwork on one of the walls of his bicycle shop on the Gemeenteplein. It became an interactive selfie wall that passers-by can be a part of themselves. A small bench is incorporated into the wall, where one can sit to take a photo (or selfie).

It is a forest. And yes, trees usually grow straight up, but there will still be more than enough crooked trees growing in a forest. This one happens to grow over the hiking path.
