The oldest mention of St. John's Hospital dates back to 1249, and it is clear that it must have been founded before that date. As in St. John's Hospital in Bruges, the brothers were responsible for caring for the sick males, later for hospital administration. The sisters were responsible for nursing girls and women, and later for caring for all the sick. The main building dates from the mid-13th century and is built in the early Gothic style, although many Romanesque proportions and forms still remain. Between the 13th and the 16th centuries, numerous renovations and further expansions were carried out. Until the early 21st century, the hospital served as a nursing home for the elderly, after which it was abandoned. From 2021 to 2023, NEST Stadslab opened its doors there, a new hotspot for heritage and art where the tradition of hospitality continues.
