The site of Poilvache may have already been used in the first centuries of our era as a bulwark against invading barbarians. The fortress certainly existed as early as 1228, when it appeared in the archives under the poetic name chastiau d'émeraude (emerald castle), probably thanks to the deep green forests that surrounded it. Over the years, the name was shortened to Méraude, and finally (in the second half of the 13th century) it received the somewhat bewildering name Poilvache (Cowhair). This name may come from a stratagem where enemies hid under cowhides among a herd of live cows, thus managing to infiltrate the fortress. At the height of its history, Poilvache held judicial power over 58 fiefdoms, as well as a mint with the right to coin money. In 1421, Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, bought the County of Namur, to which Poilvache belonged at that time. Poilvache was destroyed in 1430 by a group of conspirators from Dinant, Huy, and Liège.
