May 25, 2026, View of the Amalfi Coast

Today, with temperatures reaching 29°C, we had a day of sightseeing. We visited, among others, the Sibyl's Cave in Cumae and the Aragonese Castle in Baia, which houses the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields. Most of the artifacts come from the waters of the Phlegraean Fields and the submerged cities discovered on the seabed between Pozzuoli and Baia. The Sibyl's Cave is beautifully situated and the view is fantastic, enhanced by light and sound effects. Finally, we saw the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pozzuoli, which is still in quite good condition. Unfortunately, the crater of the Phlegraean Fields was closed to visitors today due to seismic activity in recent days. Our hosts, however, tried to assure us that the new hotel building would surely survive, and in the worst case, we should just live on the street. We will see how the situation develops and hope for the best.

The Cathedral of Massa Lubrense was founded in 1512 on the orders of Monsignore Girolamo Castaldi, as despite the over 18 hamlets and numerous churches in Massa, there was not yet a suitable episcopal building. The existing church Estaurita de Sant'Erasmo was integrated into the construction, and in 1677 the Church of Purgatory was erected next to the bell tower. After the earthquake of 1687, restoration and embellishment works began in the 18th century, including a splendid majolica floor and numerous polychrome marble altars, which gave the complex its current appearance. The last addition was the bell tower, rebuilt in 1925 to a design by the architect Emilio Mayer. https://fondoambiente.it/luoghi/antica-cattedrale-santa-maria-delle-grazie

The island of Capri offers some of the most spectacular views in the Mediterranean, whether you observe it from its high paths or admire it from the mainland, particularly from nearby Massa Lubrense.

Even from the beach of Castellammare di Stabia, a town with over 60,000 inhabitants in the province of Naples, you can easily observe the top of Vesuvius. The volcano is imposing and often characterizes the skyline of these areas.

the Sorrento peninsula with its views and colors is certainly one of the most evocative places in Italy and the territory of Massa Lubrense is the symbol of this area with its glimpses of Naples, Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

A town of about 14,000 inhabitants on the Sorrento peninsula, Massa Lubrense is one of the least known but most characteristic places in the area. Historically, it is known, on the occasion of the monarchy-republic referendum of June 1946, for having recorded the highest percentage of votes in favor of the monarchy: 97.3% of the total voted monarchist.
