Church of San Romerio

Highlight • Religious Site

You have to earn this church. It is perched 800 meters above the valley floor on a rocky outcrop and overlooks the valley of the Puschlav. Neither mountain railways nor shuttle buses are available to shorten the coveted meters in altitude. Every meter of the flowing descent has to be struggled for beforehand. Not least because of this, the church is a well-known highlight among mountain bikers.

The small adjacent inn provides a little refreshment, including home-made grappa.

Marco Pantani Monument

Highlight • Monument

The side of the Mortirolo that starts from Mazzo di Valtellina is undoubtedly the most demanding, but also the most rewarding.
Here the deeds of numerous world cycling champions took place, including Marco Pantani, where a hairpin bend in his honor can be admired at this point.

Ferrovia Retica RhB, Tirano (Bernina Railway)
Fascinatingly different since 1889
1910 Opening of the St. Moritz – Tirano line (Bernina Railway)
With our unique mountain routes, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Glacier Express and Bernina Express, we have been guaranteeing fascinating rail experiences across Graubünden since 1889. Our world-famous railway has become an integral part of one of the most beautiful landscapes in Switzerland. What began in 1889 with the opening of the route from Landquart to Klosters is now a 385 kilometer long route network in the middle of the Swiss high mountains. Harmoniously embedded in the wild nature, the railway lines and artificial buildings contribute to the charm of Graubünden.
In 1888, Grisons railway pioneers realized their idea of a mountain railway. At the initiative of the Dutchman Willem-Jan Holsboer, they founded the Landquart-Davos AG narrow-gauge railway. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the same year and the Landquart – Klosters railway line was opened in 1889. The first steam trains ran from Landquart to Davos as early as 1890. The routes to St. Moritz, Disentis and Scuol-Tarasp were later added. Thanks to the mergers with the Arosa and Bernina Railways, the route network expanded.

The terminus of the Bernina Line. You can also reach it without the Bernina Express by regular regional train. Or by bus from Samedan or Pontresina to La Prese and then change to the regional train for the rest of the journey.

The station, located at an altitude of 429 meters above sea level, was opened on June 29, 1902, along with the newly constructed line from Sondrio. The placement of the station building on the side was a preliminary construction step for the then-planned but never-realized extension towards Bormio, the so-called Ortler Railway. Since July 1, 1908, Tirano has also served as a transfer station to the Bernina Railway. At that time, the RhB built its own station building on the forecourt of the Italian station. Passenger traffic on the Italian line is now handled by Trenord. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahnhof_Tirano
