Built in the early 1900s and named after Lord Thomas Allnutt Brassey, the Naracauli Washery processed blende, the mineral from which zinc was extracted. Connected to the Gennamari and Ingurtosu mines by funiculars and railways, it was one of Sardinia's main mining facilities for decades. Dismantled in the 1970s, today its monumental remains—immersed in the landscape of the Costa Verde—are one of the most iconic images of the Sardinian Geomineral Park.

It would also be very nice for the gentle slope that makes it feasible uphill towards Montevecchio. It's a shame that as of today (2/10/25) it is rideable but not very clean....it could be an interesting connection to go to/from the Crocorigas road or the Mines.

Pro tip: You don't have to cycle through the deep spot where the cars drive through; there's a footpath to the side in the bushes where you can cross with your bike almost without getting your feet wet.

Suddenly you find yourself in front of a fenced-in property. We walked past it on the left. If you don't want to do that, you can cancel the tour.

Depending on the water level, you have to go through it (shallow ford) or you can hop over the small tributary at the edge.

The Arbus region offers a highly diverse and rugged landscape for mountain biking. You'll encounter a blend of mountains, hills, vast golden sand dunes like those at Piscinas, and a wild coastline with alternating cliffs and beaches. Inland, trails traverse the green Linas mountains and areas characterized by Mediterranean scrub and oak woods, especially around Monte Arcuentu and the historic mining districts. This varied topography provides everything from challenging ascents to scenic coastal paths.
Yes, Arbus offers trails suitable for beginners. For example, the Red River Crossing – Piscinas Dunes loop from Marina di Gùturu 'e Flùmini is an easy 14.1-mile (22.7 km) route that leads through coastal and dune landscapes. This route features significant elevation changes, traversing the unique Piscinas Dunes and exploring the historic mining landscapes, requiring approximately 4 hours and 12 minutes to complete.
While many trails in Arbus offer rugged terrain, there are easier options that can be enjoyed by families, particularly those with some biking experience. The region's coastal paths and wider tracks through the dune systems can be less demanding. Look for routes categorized as 'easy' in the komoot guide, such as the Ford Crossing – Piscinas Dunes loop from Dune di Piscinas, which is relatively short and flat.
Generally, dogs are welcome on many outdoor trails in Sardinia, but it's always best to check local regulations or specific trail signage, especially within protected areas like the Piscinas Dunes, which are a habitat for Sardinian deer. When bringing your dog, ensure they are well-behaved, kept on a leash where required, and that you carry waste bags to maintain the natural environment.
The Arbus region is rich in unique sights. You can explore the fascinating industrial archaeology of the abandoned mines of Ingurtosu and Montevecchio, which offer a 'Wild West' atmosphere. The vast golden sand dunes of Piscinas are a natural wonder. For natural features, consider visiting the Su Mannau Cave or the Oridda Gorge. Some trails also offer stunning views from mountain passes like Bidderdi Pass (492 m).
Yes, many of the mountain bike routes in Arbus are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the Piscinas Dunes – Red River Crossing loop from Piscinas, a moderate 23.8-mile (38.3 km) path, and the Red River Crossing – View of the Piscinas Dunes loop from Ingurtosu, a moderate 46-kilometer route.

While specific designated parking areas for every trailhead may vary, you can generally find parking in or near the starting points of popular routes, especially in villages like Montevecchio, Piscinas, or Marina di Gùturu 'e Flùmini. It's advisable to check the route details on komoot for specific parking recommendations or look for public parking in nearby towns.
Public transport options to reach specific mountain bike trailheads in the more remote areas of Arbus can be limited. While there are bus services to the town of Arbus itself, reaching the starting points for trails in areas like Piscinas or the old mining villages might require a combination of public transport and a short ride or taxi. Planning ahead and checking local bus schedules is recommended.
You'll find cafes and small eateries in the main town of Arbus and in some of the smaller villages or coastal areas like Piscinas. However, many of the mountain bike trails traverse wild and untouched areas, particularly in the mining districts and along the more remote sections of the Costa Verde. It's always a good idea to carry sufficient water and snacks, as amenities might not be directly on the trail.
