Originally a country house, the Verginese was transformed into a ducal residence in the early sixteenth century by Alfonso I d’Este and donated to Laura Eustochia Dianti, his lover after the death of Lucrezia Borgia. Upon the Duke’s death, the lady retired there, making it her small private court and ordered its renovation, carried out mainly by Girolamo da Carpi. Next to the delizia is a small eighteenth-century church, joined to the building by a portico, also from the same period. The interior was decorated starting in the eighteenth century with stucco, tempera-style Art Nouveau flowers, shells, rosettes, volutes and thick frames that outline ceilings. The nearby dovecote tower is a remnant of the appurtenances originally placed around the delizia and dates back to the sixteenth century. It was used as a ‘house’ for carrier pigeons. The rooms of the Verginese are home to the permanent exhibition Mors Inmatura. The Fadieni burial ground, which documents the discovery of a small Roman necropolis a few steps from the Delizia. In addition to the five steles, over 200 finds from the tombs are on display, including clay materials, bronze artefacts, horse harnesses, a series of coins and an exceptional collection of glass pottery, intact and finely worked, very rare for the Ferrara area. Outside, the garden behind the delizia has been reconstructed, called the “brolo”, consisting in the Renaissance essentially of flowers and fruit trees, to combine the delight of colours and scents with the profit of producing fruit for the table. Next to the castle, there is the Vinaia del Sapere, once a drying room, recently renovated and intended for exhibitions, meetings and cultural activities. Opening hours (check before planning your visit) March to October Wednesday and Friday from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm and from 3.30 pm to 7.00 pm November to February Wednesday and Friday from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm and from 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm For groups open every day by reservation.

It's a cycle path but even the most avid road cyclists will have the pleasure of following it, the asphalt is good and you can pedal without having to think about car traffic.
