The Hochwechsel (1,743 m) is the highest peak of the Wechsel Mountains on the border between Lower Austria and Styria and a popular hiking destination in the Vienna Alps. Characteristic is the vast, open plateau with its alpine meadows, from which, in clear visibility, a magnificent panorama opens up over the surrounding mountain world to Rax, Schneeberg and the Styrian Alps. Directly at the summit is the traditional Wetterkoglerhaus and a striking summit cross. Due to the gentle forms of the Wechsel Mountains and the extensive high-altitude trails, the Hochwechsel is particularly suitable for longer hikes and traverses, creating a sense of landscape spaciousness over long distances.

The Festenburg summit is located on the Niederwechsel and is a rather inconspicuous, natural point along the ridge. Instead of a distinct summit structure, forest and the gentle landscape of the Wechselland characterize this section. A quiet waypoint away from the more prominent peaks – typical for the elongated ridges of the Wechsel Mountains.

The border stone on the Grünberg marks a transition between Lower Austria and Styria. It lies directly on the state border and is a small, but interesting landmark along the hiking route. An inconspicuous detail on the path that makes it visible that you are switching from one federal state to another here.

The large wooden „W“ stands directly on the Hochwechsel and marks the start of the Hochwechsel Trail „The WU“. It serves as a kind of gateway to the mountain bike trail, which leads from here across the alpine pasture in the direction of Marienseer Schwaig. Due to its striking shape, the „W“ is now also a distinctive photo motif directly on the Hochwechsel.

The Wetterkoglerhaus is located directly on the summit of the Hochwechsel at 1,743 meters and is a hut of the Austrian Alpine Club. With good visibility, the hut offers a magnificent panorama over the Wechsel region to Schneeberg, Rax, and Hochschwab. Due to its immediate proximity to the summit cross and chapel, the Wetterkoglerhaus is an ideal resting and refreshment stop at the highest point of the tour.

The mountain ridge of the Wechsel stretches for over 15 km - the eastern Austrian low mountain range on the border between Lower Austria and Styria 🌲 Its three most lofty peaks each rise over 1,700 m ⛰️ Thanks to its mountain landscapes, which range from lovely to challenging, the Wechsel is considered a hiking destination for families on the one hand - and a local recreation area for experienced hikers and climbers on the other 🥾 The Hochwechsel, as the highest peak, offers particularly worthwhile views: the panoramic view stretches from Semmering and Rax to the Schneeberg 🌄 In good weather, even Burgenland, Styria, Hungary and Slovenia can be seen 😎 From mid-May to mid-November, a wonderful rest in the Wetterkoglerhaus is also tempting 🧃 www.wieneralpen.at/ausflugsziel-in-den-wiener-alpen-entdecken/a-hochwechsel-im-wechselgebirge

The Hochwechsel summit not only offers an impressive panoramic view of the surrounding landscape of Styria and Lower Austria, but is also known for its picturesque chapel, which invites visitors to reflect and relax 🌄 Inside, the chapel surprises with colorful paintings, coats of arms and inscriptions that are painted directly onto the wood of the dome and reach all the way to the top ⛪ Source www.steiermark.com/de/Oststeiermark/Urlaub-planen/Ausflugsziele/Hochwechsel-Gipfel_isd_42403458
