According to an ancient legend, it is said that Filottrano was founded by the Lombard prince Ottrano: the name of the town is the synthesis of Mons Philiorum Optrani, or the "mountain of the sons of Ottrano". The first certain sources on the existence of a small fortified village date back to 1187. In the heart of the historic center, the town hall stands out with its civic tower. The Musone originates in the municipality of Gagliole, at around 775 meters above sea level, from the convergence of two valleys and continues eastwards to flow into the Adriatic Sea a few kilometers away.
