Piazza del Popolo in Ascoli is often called the 'Living Room of Italy'. It is a Renaissance masterpiece characterized by its travertine paving, which gives it a unique elegance. Its rectangular shape is framed by a loggia of 59 arches and crenellated palazzi. The historic heart of the city, it hosts the Palazzo dei Capitani, the Church of San Francesco, and the historic Caffè Meletti. It is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy.

Montefalcone Appennino is located on top of a sandstone cliff, its name derives from the falcons that nest on top of the mountain called Monte del Falcone. Scattered throughout the town there are several panoramic viewpoints where the Monti Sibillini and part of the Monti Della Laga can be seen very well.

The Sentiero della cresta is a section of path that goes from Smerillo to Montefalcone Appennino, and it is certainly the most panoramic, with a spectacular view of the Monti Sibillini and also of part of the Monti della Laga. You need to be a little careful because in some sections it is slightly exposed. Personally, I believe that this trail, but it can easily be extended to the entire area between Smerillo and Montefalcone Appennino, offers, in the Marche region, one of the most scenic and evocative panoramas of the Monti Sibillini and Monti della Laga that I remember.

Smerillo is one of the most evocative villages in the Marche region, located in the province of Fermo (FM). Although historically it was part of the province of Ascoli Piceno (AP), since 2004 it has been under the jurisdiction of Fermo. It is nicknamed the "Balcony of the Sibillini" for its incredible panoramic view that ranges from the peaks of the Sibillini Mountains to the Adriatic Sea.

The sanctuary of the Ss. Crocifisso dell'Icona was originally dedicated to S. Maria delle Grazie and it is significant that even today there is a detached fresco of the Madonna with Child (Icon) on the high altar. Also dedicated to the Virgin is the Madonna of Loreto and S. Nicola di Bari, a work attributed to Sebastiano Ghezzi. However, since the early seventeenth century the polychrome wooden Crucifix (of uncertain authorship) placed inside a baroque altar has been venerated there, and this cult has changed the declination of the sanctuary. The current church was built in the mid-sixteenth century, but was radically remodeled at the end of the seventeenth century and, again, in 1780. The reconstruction of the façade, dome and side chapels is due to Lazzaro Giosafatti. The altarpiece depicting the Translation of the Holy House of Loreto and S. Nicola da Bari, oil on canvas attributed to the Venetian Pietro Gaia. (c) https://eventi.turismo.marche.it/it-it/Cosa-vedere/Attrazioni/Chiesa-del-SS-Crocifisso-dell-Icona/484

The church was begun in 1280 by the Dominican order, in memory of the visit of friar Pietro da Verona to Ascoli in 1250. Construction continued until the 16th century. The facade of travertine blocks has three rounded oculi and a single portal with two flanking columns extending from a rounded pediment. The facade portal was designed by Giuseppe Giosafatti (1643–1731). The lateral portal faces the piazzetta and has Doric columns (1523), designed by Cola dell'Amatrice. Apse of the church On the side walls is an inscription with the tax and customs laws of the city. The interior with three naves has a number of travertine altars. The main altar was designed in 1724 by Giuseppe and Lazzaro Giosafatti, it is decorated with a Madonna del Rosario by Luigi Devò flanked by marble statues or the allegories of purity and humility. The church also has paintings by Lodovico Trasi, Giuseppe Angelini, Giovanni Battista Buonocore of Campli and Tommaso Nardini. The side walls have frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries. The relic of the Sacred Spine is sheltered in a 15th-century gilded silver reliquary by Nicola da Campli. (c) Wikipedia
