13 Lakes Plateau (Pian dei 13 Laghi)

Highlight (Segment) • Lake

The lakes actually visible today are twelve or eleven, depending on the season, and are: the Black Lake, the White Lake, the Drajo Lake, the Lake of Man, the Twin Lakes, the First Lake, the Long Lake, the Lake Ramella (also called Lago dei Cannoni), the Green Lakes and the Lake of the Walnut. The latter collects water only during the thaw and is therefore not visible throughout the year. The thirteenth body of water is instead the Lago della Carota, no longer visible as it is now completely underground.

It is possible to go up on the plateau with the chair lift, otherwise go up on foot. From the plateau you can then climb many peaks with breathtaking landscapes.

Lake of the Cannons

Highlight • Lake

The place name Prali is derived from the dialect word Pral (meadows). Economically, the valley is dominated by agriculture. There are also several talc mines (museum) and a winter sports area (starting point of several hikes and mountain climbs).
The military buildings "Ricoveri Peruccetti" are from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
At 2586m above sea level is the lake Ramella better known as "Lago dei Cannoni". The name derives from four canon positions that have been near the lake since 1905. Two of these cannons (the only one in the Western Alps) are still in positions. A gun carriage can be recognized in the lake.
Data of the cannons
Caliber: 149mm
Length of the cannon: 5.82m
Weight of the barrel: 3700 kg
Weight of the complete cannon 8220 Kg
Range: 16.500m
Charging time approx .: 6 minutes

A beautiful circular hike. Beware, however, of the misleading two-hour indication! Messner might be able to manage it. If you're a regular hiker, no less than three hours or more... WARNING: Once you reach Lake Cannoni or Ramella, if you suffer from vertigo, do not follow the signs for trail A on the right. There are exposed sections, and one section is equipped with a damaged rope. Turn left and you will rejoin the outward route at the level of the early 1900s forts.

Magnificent lake at the foot of La Taillante. If its edges are still accessible, they are protected because they host glacial and boreal plant species descending directly from the last glaciations.

For multi-day treks, the area around Vallanta Hut serves as an excellent stopover for those on the Giro del Monviso.

Are there easy hiking options around the lakes for less experienced visitors?

While many trails in the high-alpine areas can be challenging, some sections, especially around the start points like Pian del Re or Pian della Regina for Lake Fiorenza, might offer easier access to the lake shores. The 13 Lakes Plateau can be reached by chairlift, making the exploration of the plateau itself more accessible before attempting more strenuous climbs.

When is the best time of year to visit the lakes around Villar Pellice?
